Update Inventor.

We are going to install Inventor 2018. We are a small company: 3 Cad Designers using Inventor.

I would like to know if there is a good step-by-step guide to install Inventor properly, in order to not have problems:

-tell what to do before i.e export the Application Options

-where to put the Templates (copy the old ones or migrate...)

-whether to crate or not new folder for the CC

-whether to crate or not new folder for Design Data

-what to do in order to not have any incompatibility, to not loose personalised materials, textures etc.

A few questions for you...

1. Did you make any changes to your design data folder in your current version of Inventor?

2. Do you have any custom read/write libraries for content center?

3. Are your current templates in a shared location?

4. Are your publish content center components shared or stored locally on each machine?

5. Although it doesn't sound like it.. Are you using Vault?

6. Where are your personal material/appearance located?

Exporting of application options are okay but certain (application) options have been removed in 2018. My recommendations.. Take screen shots and do the settings yourself for 2018.

Hi Mark,

thanks for your help.

1. Yes we often change the sheet metal rules, I remember I have changed dimensions styles in my drawing templates.

2. No.

3. Yes

4. Yes. I would like to know if I have to maintain the same folder or to create a new one (I believe we should maintain the same folder and add the new files to the old ones)

5. We are not using Vault.

6. I don't really know. We have created new materials duplicating other existing materials and editing them.

Changes made in template compared to the design data folder are 2 different things. If you changed the information just in the template and didn't save back than there was no modification made to the design data folder. I'm just trying to save you time in your migration... Please confirm if you updated your actual XML files located in your design data folder.

Keep your templates as is and open them directly in 2017 and save them. However if you are planning on your users to keep working in 2015 until you are finished then you need to migrate/save them into another folder until you are ready.

Same hold true for content center.

If materials/appearances were modified as document materials/appearances then you don't have any global material/appearance. So you need to confirm if you wrote them back to a material and/or appearance library.

Yes, I'm sure we update and save. Manage-Style and standards-Update/save, every time we create a new sheet metal rule.

I can't figure out if I: 1. using Style library Manager 2018 have to migrate the old 2017 styles in a new folder in the server "Design Data 2018"

2.leave all as it is and tell Inventor 2018 to use the old folder "Design Data 2017"

Both these are not quite logical to me. It's why I'm asking advise to people more experienced.

I think we have modified only in the document material/appearances. I want to be sure that opening that part in Inventor 2018 it maintain the same texture or material.
