topic Placing Origin Indicator - Overlapping Views in Inventor Forum

When placing an Origin Indicator on a view to start an Ordinate Dimension it is not possible to do if the select view overlaps with another (within the dotted frame line).

I know best practice is likely to not overlap views but it is a common practice at my company.

Is this a bug/unintended behavior?

Seems to be working fine for me.. Can you post a file that exhibits the behavior? Or a screenshot to ensure we are setting up the same scenario..

Hi! The ordinate dimensions can only be placed on one view where the origin indicator is. You cannot place ordinate dimensions across views.

Many thanks!

Thank you for your reply @johnsonshiue, unfortunately I am not trying to place an ordinate on a view that I did not select, the problem is that I am able to select a view that overlaps with another and then cannot place the origin as it seems to be now blocked by the other view that wasn't a problem a moment before.

@mcgyvr thanks for your reply as well, please see below for a visual and hopefully better explanation.

For example: If I select View 2 for an ordinate dimension in the below image, I can select within the overlap with no issue, but to place my origin I only can select the snap points boxed in green in the second image; the red boxed points are unable to be selected. If I wanted to place an origin in the red points those parts must be outside of View 1's border.

I can now say that yes I can duplicate your issue (In 2023 anyways) and it does seem like a bug.

Hi Folks,

I am able to reproduce the same behavior on 2020. It is indeed very confusing. It seems that Inventor is confused by which model edge is at the front (view) or back (view). In those overlapped area, you could place the origin indicator by selecting the other view first and then select a vertex. I don't think Inventor supports this workflow correctly.

Many thanks!
