how do I label parts in an assembly

I have created an assembly, and I want to add text with arrows to label the parts (i.e. bearing, seal, electrode, etc). This is a section view, and I want to use it for a presentation (I'm not looking for how to add dimensions). Is there a way to do this?

You could use LEADER TEXT and pull one of the iProperties from the part, (shown below using the Inventor tutorial files)

Or you could manually type the part.

Obviously not a section view, but the same principles apply.

You might want to look into creating a new presentation file where you can do exploded views,etc.. too..

unless you want iproperties as have been suggested.

Leaders as everyone else mentioned, or Balloons:

Note that you can change your Balloon style to look like a leader, and you can change it to pull in any iProperty you want, therefore ballooning will be more automatic than adding leaders.

Thank you all for quick responses. The screenshot you showed does not look like mine. I am using inventor, and have the assembly open in that. There is no annotate tab. So are you in another program?

All the answers so far have used the drawing environment of Inventor.

If you are using Inventor 2018, you can use the new 3d annotation tools in the part or assembly environment. See: http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2018/ENU/?guid=GUID-B8779786-A71C-4A5C-B9A9-7EB1A9918946 In the past, I have used a position rep as an exploded view of an assembly.

You will need to open a drawing, place a view of your assembly, and then add the leaders or balloons.

Swalton, thanks for your post. Your first link was very helpful. BTW, your second link about the 3d annotation tool is broken.

I wonder/hope that some day the 3d annotation tool will also be in the assembly environment.

Thanks to all for your help. As you can probably tell, I am very new to inventor. I haven't delved into drawings yet, so don't know if it will give good results. FYI - for the immediate need, I decided to export as an image and label it in Powerpoint. A bit of a lazy cop-out, but I know how to get the assembly looking the way I want in the assembly environment, and I didn't want to invest in another learning curve right now to get it looking the way I want in the drawing environment.

Nope.. 3d annotation is half finished... When something is "new" from Autodesk you can just about guarantee its half finished..

3d annotation is brand new for 2018..

If Autodesk made cars you would buy one only to find out it only turns left... Right hand turns will be available as an update later in the year or on next years models...

Its "REALLY" easy though... You should try it.. I'd bet you could have finished it before you did in powerpoint..

Create drawing.. place base view... add leaders.. Should take all of 3 minutes flat if that..

I have tried a little, and so far have made a relatively ugly isometric view that I haven't figured out how to section. I already have a beautiful sectioned assembly, which is what I loaded into the drawing, but the section also does not transfer in. I suppose I will eventually learn this, but the learning curve is too steep in the short term.

So, even though it states that the annotations are in the assembly environment in the Whats New section:

Assemblies

3D Annotation for Assemblies

A new Annotate tab is added to the ribbon in the assembly environment. The new tab contains commands that let you add dimensions, notes, and other information to your assembly.

It really means part environment. KILLING ME....

Maybe.

It looks like 2018 shipped with 3D annotations in the part environment.

The "What's New" for the 2018.1 release says that 3D annotations were added to the assembly environment.

I have not installed either, so I don't know for sure.

What version are you using?

I am using 2018 version, build 112, Date 2/16/2017. Light_Guy, I am not seeing the tab you are referring to in the assembly environment. For now, I am just exporting and annotation in another application. It doesn't come up very often. Thanks for your replies.
