It's just a wild guess but I think DRTW will save the file to the format of the last Inventor opened. If I open IV 2025 then DRTW 2025, it will output the file in the right format. However if I open IV 2026, then DRTW 2025, it will save the file to 2026.

Is it normal for the drawing ressource transfer to save the file in the latest version of inventor installed?

I installed Inventor 2026 last week, but I cannot fully move to it yet(Vault and stuff). I just wanted to have a look at the new goodies.

This morning I opened drawing ressource transfer tool (2025), to add some sketch symbols to a drawing made in Inventor 2025 and it saved the file to Inventor 2026 format that I can no longer open with Inventor 2025. LUCKILY I had a backup so I could restore it to a usable state. But I don't think this is supposed to happen, right? RIGHT?

IMO there's no such thing as "looking at the new goodies" without committing to the new version of the software. A mere click in the new version of Inventor may have already migrated the file (or a file it's "invisibly" linked to), rendering it inaccessible to the previous version. When we do an upgrade here, everybody does it the same day (and I mean everybody; even our read-only versions).

If it's possible to have multiple versions installed at the same time, I should be able to use a specific version when I need to. Otherwise Autodesk should just include a cleanup tool when installing their new software. This is a major bug, and they should look into it.

Right, that shouldn't happen! I suspect there are some traps, though, when switching between versions. Definitely always run the intended version of Inventor first before running the DRTW of that version. I just tried to start DRTW 2025 after having run Inventor 2023, and it wouldn't start, complained about missing files. After starting and closing Inventor 2025, DRTW 2025 started as expected.

I wonder if there is some registry stuff going on that started the wrong version of DRTW because you had run 2026 earlier or still had it open?

In any case, that should not happen! @johnsonshiue can you shed any light on this?

I'm 100% sure I didn't have IV2026 opened at the moment and I opened DRTW 2025. But I noticed some other annoyances like this with Vault too, if I had 2026 installed it just tried to open all the files with 2026 and there's no way in Vault to set a default version of IV to open files with. From memory, it also did this when I switched from IV2024 to IV2025 last year, it's just the first time I notice it with DRTW. I'm curious if Design Assistant and Style library also behaves in a similar way. But i uninstalled 2026 for now.

Hi! The only logical explanation that I can think of is that Drawing Resource Transfer Wizard 2026 was launched. If you find a workflow reproducing the behavior, please let me know.

Hi John,

I uploaded a screen recording to OneDrive :

DRTW Bug

Here are the steps I took :

1. Open Inventor 2026, do nothing in it, shut it down(Off camera, sorry)

2. Open DRTW 2025, go through the usual steps to transfer stuff to a new drawing

3. Open Inventor 2025 and try to open the drawing I transfered stuff into.

4. Receive the error message the file has been saved with a more recent version of Inventor and 2025 cannot open it.

Hi! I can reproduce the behavior now. This is wrong. It does seem that DRTW 2025 can launch 2026 inadvertently. I will work with the project team to understand it better.
