Hi Oilfan94,

If I understand correctly, you would create the Positional Representations and/or View Representations in the assembly file, and then they'll be available for use in the presentation file.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com

I'm using Inventor 2018 Pro.

Sometimes when I'm making assembly drawings, I like to show parts of the assembly in an un-shaded visual style and highlight other components by showing them as shaded.

The way I do this, is to create a new positional representation. This opens up the possibility to to add an overlay view in the drawing. I set the original view to un-shaded and the over lay to shaded, then turn the visibility of individual parts or assemblies on or off as needed.

I'm trying to do the same thing with an exploded view from a presentation file. But there doesn't seem to be an option to create a new positional representation, thus I can't add an overlay to the view.

I've tried adjusting the opacity of a part in the presentation, but that doesn't follow to the drawing view.

Ideally, it would be great if I could adjust the visual style of individual parts or sub-assemblies, right in the drawing view....but I don't think that Inventor allows for that.

So is there a way to do this? Can I somehow create an overlay on a presentation view, or otherwise turn shading on or off individually?

There are some other methods too..

That looks interesting, but I believe it was done on a previous version and I can't find a place to create a color style and/or set opacity to zero. I've been looking through the Appearance dialog but can't find what they are showing.

But I can get pretty much the same thing with an overlay view.

I just can't create a overlay with a view of a presentation.

Hi Oilfan94,

I misunderstood your question previously. But no, there is not a way to create overlays views from presentation views.

As far as how to get the wireframe/shaded hybrid view from a presentation view, I can't think of a way to do that.

I can create different representations in the assembly, and even choose which one will open in the presentation file. But once inside the presentation, there aren't any options to relating to representations....and once that representation is put into a drawing, there is no option for an overlay view.

That is correct, starting in IV2017 and in IV2018, you can create different "Views" within the IPN environment but not the ability to Overlay. This would allow you to place views in your Drawing that are "Different" but yet of the same IPN. You can modify each "View/Snapshot" to have items either hidden or moved to a different position.

Not sure if this is would help you as you still can't overlay.
