I created an assembly months back. Now opening to use the project for similar project. Need to use it. Had to resolve many links. Weird is that they were in files I have never created. It worked fine months ago..

I create a file for every project, because Im the only drafter and dont use Vault (Dont know how to set it up) But anyways, all components for each project are in that file if I need in a another. I copy it into that file. The only thing I can think of is I imported a Enclosure, but I do it all the time.

Well.. without any real details its hard to give help here..

Being a lone Inventor user here at my company I have 1 project file and use it for EVERYTHING and I don't use Vault either..

No way would I create a new project file for each new project.. (Just no benefit to it IMO)..

But the only thing I can say is that when Inventor is having to search for reference files it usually indicates your active project file is not setup to include those file locations correctly..

Couple of questions..

1. These resolves links.. Were they associated to content center components or related to many different types of components.

2. Not sure if I've read your reply the wrong way.. But it sounds like you are copying same files from one project to another. Is that correct?

Hi! The only thing I can think of is that the Workspace or Library path in the active project is not set to where they should be. Could you check those paths in Project dialog? Are they properly set?

Apart from what mcgyvr has said, I think it's fine using one IPJ file per project.

1st of all, as you said you are drafter (engineering support), are you the only one using Inventor files at your place? If not, the issue may be very complicate.

And can you tell if you create project folder with a new IPJ file when starting new project?

BTW just take care of it when you copy components from one project to another.

Yes, you have to rename those copies for new project. re-link components for the IAM copy.

We only use a couple of Project Files. The first is our primary production items with a couple of Library files for Read-Only supplier parts. The second is for custom customer assemblies. We then use our Production folder as a Read-Only Library and our Supplier library as a Read Only library. The third is for our production fixtures and jigs. Again we have our primary production folder and supplier folder as Read-Only libraries.

This way we can still use our stock items for custom jobs without the worry of editing stock parts. We only have one Custom Project file for all the custom work we do. It seems to save having duplicate items across many folders.

As I have got into this project. Previous guy that worked here used solid works, saw that some of my files were solid works and they are linked to files some where else. Not sure where. The reason I do project files is I do not have Vault set up. Would really like that, also a library in Vault. Our IT has no idea about the program. Where I came from we had all the standards set up. I was told by autodesk the Vault would not work with Windows 10, then went to Autodesk University and was told I could set up Basic Vault for a single user. Not sure how and what would happen to all my existing files.

Thanks Everyone for their help.

Any one on one to set up Vault would be great.

@Anonymous

Vault basic can be setup on a PC/machine or a server. The server installation is really straight forward but may require additional configuration/settings based on what machine you're installing it on. When the installation occurs it will put Microsoft SQL Express unless you have a full SQL installation on a server and its configure per the Autodesk Vault Advance Guide.

In addition Vault basic doesn't have a lot of configuration to get it up and running.. The main thing would be your project folder structure and the configuration between Vault, your local (Vault) workspace, and the Inventor project file.

Do you guys have a reseller? If you do, they can walk you through your steps.. Or you can post over in the Vault forum and users there will assist you.

I would want it on my pc, server is in another state, the IT help is terrible. What do you mean Vault Basic does not have a lot of configuration? What would I have to worry about in my project files? We have a help number, but they have not been much help, but I can try again.

In regards to my project, the files I saw were solidworks I opened from project file and they turned into Inventor components. Don't have time to fix old project right now but Im going to do that to all components then try the assembly. As for now for new project I'm just opening parts I need from old project.

Thank You

Vault basic is just a secure location to store your data. Without the Vault Client or the CAD/Vault Add-ins the data cannot be accessed.. When it comes to Vault basic (free version) compared to the paid versions.. Vault basic doesn't have all those bells and whistles so there's not a lot that you have to do compared to those features in the paid version of Vault

With your project file you just need to configure it as a Vault project and any normal stuff that you do for a standard Inventor (single user) project file. With Vault you would only need a single project file and in most cases its placed at the root of your workspace so it can find all the related files below it.

The other thing you have to do is configure the mapping (Vault Ribbon tab) in Inventor that links your local Vault workspace, library files, and content center location between your hard drive and the folders within Vault.
