Set File Path of ipt and iam files from a step file

Is there any way to set the file path of the ipt files that are created from a step file or is it just up to Inventor to decide that? So in other words, when I open the step file it creates the iam and ipt files in a certain location, but I can't find anywhere that I can change that location.

So if I get it right, you want to manually save the .ipt/.iam of a STEP file at a different location?

If so, you can choose between various output locations when importing. See picture below for more information:

When selecting the 'User Path' option, you can choose where to save the folder containing the .ipt/.iam. Make sure to save the file after pressing 'OK'! Besides, you can uncheck the 'Save in Subfolder' resulting in the file not creating its own folder where it is stored in finally.

I never see that window when I open a step file. It just opens the file as an .iam and I have no options.

Make a project folder.

Make a Project *.ipj saved in that folder.

Make sure your Project is active.

Place the STEP file in the folder.

Open

Save

Enjoy.

I think you may have misunderstood what I was asking. I don't see the Import dilaog box open at all when I open a step file. It doesn't matter where I open the step file from, even if it is the exact same folder location as the ipj project file. So how do I get that dialog box to pop up when I select the step file to open?

I found a solution. Using the reset utility worked. I wish there was an easier way, but I guess it's not too bad.
