There was no author tool for the tutorials that preceded the guided tutorial format we released in 2017. It was a very tedious and manual process to create one and it was done in raw xml. You can open any of the older xml files to see how they were structured. There was no "publish" function or public/private share. The required files just had to reside in the correct folders so Inventor could find them. We no longer support the old tutorial format, but If you open an old tutorial xml file and can figure it out, you could theoretically create a new one (text panel and datasets only) for an older version of Inventor.

Unfortunately, the mp4 format we used for the videos can't be created anymore. We used an old version of Camtasia that is no longer available to produce an mp4 with no swf controller. When the newer versions of Camtasia weren't able to produce the type of mp4 we needed, we switched to using the .webm format in 2017.

If you are an educator, Inventor is free to students and educators. You might investigate that option and then use the author tool that is available in 2018.

Let's say I wanted to create something like this for my class, what would I need to learn?

Hello,

When you click Create Tutorial, the Anatomy of a Tutorial page contains the information you need to get started: How to create a tutorial (video), How to create a video with Screencast (video), and Guided Tutorial Tips (Help page).

The only thing that I would caution you about is the share. If you choose Share in public gallery, it is live in the gallery for everyone in the world to see as soon as it finishes processing. If you only want your class to see it, then choose Share with specific individuals and then enter their email address or A360 sign in ID.

If you want to examine the nuts and bolts of a finished tutorial, you can Duplicate a tutorial to get author/edit permission. You can then edit and modify the tutorial as much as you want. Please don't duplicate an existing tutorial and then share an exact copy in the public gallery.

Hope that gets you going.

Cheers,

Paul

Paul,

Thank you, that does help a lot.

I've looked up what you said, and found that the "Create Tutorial" button is found in versions 2017 or later. How were tutorials created in the versions before that?
