I'm trying to put a seam in a sheet metal cone. I can do one on a cylinder but I'm having difficulty with a cone. I want to put a contour flange on the end of the rip. I created a plane on the ends of the 2 sides of the rip. I created a profile on a sketch on that plane. No edges will highlight to select them. The long rip edges should appear as dots or points on the created plane but it looks like they're foreshortened lines. Can anyone give me a good work flow to create this seam?

Hi Guys,

This is not an easy task. I need to think about it. Inventor sheet metal is not good at modeling pseudo-developable geometry. You can get the shape created but you may not be able to unfold it. If I have found a solution, I will let you know.

Many thanks!

Thanks for all the help. I'm not there yet but I have hope. It seems I presented a challenging problem.

S May, Konstuctor, thanks for your input. I don't understand how a line generated by Rip command cannot be linear. That is confusing. I'm sorry I can't open your files as I'm using IV2011. It looks like you made the seam with contour flanges separate from the cone. They maybe you used the bend command to connect them?

Adrian, I can see the profile on the outside edge but not the inside. I think a manual seam is what I'm trying to do.

JD, here's my ipt I've used the thicken command on surfaces before. I modeled my cone as a lofted flange. Is there a different work flow that would facilitate making a seam?

Johnson, thanks for thinking. I look forward to seeing what you think.

When I solve this, I (or my technician) will make this part and use it. Thanks to all of you!

Good afternoon Sascha. If I understand correctly the work flow is this:

Create 2 sketches each with a circles with a gap in each (what is the yellow rectangle? How do you get the gaps in the correct place/orientation?) This will mean not having to use the Rip command.

Loft a flange between the 2 circles creating the cone.

(2 triangular sections appear along each side of the gap - how?

Make sketches and rectangles and extrude along the gap (what plane do you use?).

Hem one side.

Make a plane.

Sketch a profile.

Extrude the profile creating a surface.

Thicken the surface. Could I use a Contour Flange instead?

Your work looks beautiful. I want to learn how to do it too.

Sascha, this is an excellent video and explanation. The reason you had a triangular area in yours and I not in mine was because my upper diameter was small (8mm). After I increased my diameter, I was able to do it - until I decreased the diameter again. The two flanges will collide when the flat pattern is made. So, I made a relief at the top (I didn't extrude all the way up the seam). This should really be an angled cut in the flat pattern but I think inventor needs a surface square to the edge. This helped some but I sill have an error when thickening the surface.

I really want to make a pattern to layout and cut sheet metal for a closed conical cap (no upper diameter). Perhaps I will end with a small hole. I think this is a good reference: http://chestofbooks.com/crafts/metal/Sheet-And-Plate-Metal-Work/Chapter-XII-Conical-Articles-Of-Short-Taper.html I think it shows the need to be able to do this (especially for making candle snuffers 😉 I will let my head rest for awhile and then come back. Thank you very much for your kind assistance.
