Color my 2D drawing?

I'm drawing in 2D, I want to add a color to some of the objects. How do I do that?

Are you looking for a shaded, colored view or individual lines and etc to be in color?

If you're wanting to show the lines in different colors, that process might be a bit more involved. Can you provide more details, or some screen shots of the result you're wanting?

@Anonymous I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum.
Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

What is your current level of experience with Inventor? In the part (.ipt) environment you would set a Material and Appearance

but lines will show up in the drawing (.idw) environment as black by default, you can set the view to Shaded to show the material color.

If you want the lines to be a custom color go to the Annotate Tab > Edit Layers > New... > change Color and Line Type, Weight etc. > Save and Close. In drawing select lines, go to the Format area and set the lines to this new layer.

If you have a part you could post or a better clarification of what you are trying to do let us know!

Hi abc123pjm,

Just to add to kelly.young's post, you can quickly select all of the lines for a particular component, by expanding the view browser node and finding the component, then right clicking on it and choosing one of these options:

Select As Edges - simply gathers all of the component edges to the current selection set, and then you would go to Annotate > Layers and choose a layer to put the edges on (assuming you've set up some layers and layer colors previously)

Properties - brings up a dialog that allows you to set all of the component edges to have a certain line type, color, etc. It's actually a bit like using a box of crayons as mcgyvr joked, and doesn't provide a quick way of making changes to the colors, but you don't need to create or modify any layers

Hi, I've included a screenshot. I want to fill in the area of the outlined M.

It's been a long time since I've used an Autodesk program. So I have to ask

questions about simple operations. How might I fill in the M? Thanks.

Hi abc123pjm,

It appears that you are asking about filling in an region of a 2D sketch in a part file (*.ipt). I think this is a bit different than what everyone thought you were asking about, due some confusion over your use of the term "drawing".

What you show is not considered a drawing in Inventor, but instead it is considered a sketch in a part file. A drawing in Inventor is an *.idw or *.dwg file, that you use to create views and annotation to a model file, such as a part (*.ipt) or assembly (*.iam).

There really is no way to color fill a region of a sketch in a part file that I am aware of.

Can you explain what your end goal is? And then maybe someone can direct you to the correct tools.

@Anonymous I can see that you have a few issues with your sketch, primarily the .000 dimensions that are never a good sign! Get used to using constraints in your sketch. If you R+Click on a line and Close Loop it will find any open areas. You most likely are wanting to Extrude to create the solid around the M.
