Hi Everyone,

I'm having some trouble with view representations. Since using Inventor, I've never been able to get a view representation to appear in my drawings. Here is my current workflow:

- Create a new view representation in an assembly. This works fine. (see attached screenshot 1)

- Lock it. Although as far as I understand this shouldn't affect whether it will appear in a drawing.

- Toggle to the drawing, place the base view, select the view, ensuring the Associative box is ticked.

- Place the view. However, this just places the full view (top / right etc) as if a specific view representation hasn't been selected. (See attached screenshot 2).

Hopefully the attached screenshots illustrate what I mean. Here I made a simple part, created a view representation called 'Section' and applied a 'Half section view' down the middle of it.

However, I can't get this to work for any assemblies of any complexity.

For further background, I'm running Inventor 2017. Also, I've also tried placing the views, right clicking, Apply Design View..., but this has no effect.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated,

Regards,

Dan

That makes sense, I knew I was being dumb somewhere along the line.

I'm trying to make sure I've got an efficient workflow, so I don't know if you can confirm. As a simple example, if I had modeled a cube but just wanted to show a corner of it in the drawing, would the only approach be: Add a base view of the whole cube e.g. plan, generate a detail view of the corner, and then suppress the original base view?

Many thanks,

Dan

yep... Thats one way to accomplish your example..

Another would be to use the "crop" modifier to just crop the base view to show that section only..

Sectioned ISO custom views in drawings

Hi,

Apologies for hijacking a thread slightly here but just looking for an opinion from the guys that solved this. A colleague of mine was looking to create a sectioned ISO view in his drawing, but in order to see a specific feature, he needed to rotate the view slightly. Normally, we would select custom view orientation, but given that it's projected from a sectioned base view, this option isn't available. Our work around is just to create a new view rep with some parts hidden from the assembly, but it's not ideal. Just wondering if anyone has a suggestion please?

Running Inventor Pro 2018

Many thanks

One way to do this (although not ideal) would be to create a new part and derive in the part/assembly you are sectioning. Create a workplane and then use the "Split" Tool with the "Split Solid" option to remove what is needed. You can then place this new part on the idw and get the view you want.

It does have some drawbacks depending if the model is a part or an assembly....plus it creates another part that has to be maintained.

If you need to discuss this further, you probably should start your own thread.
