FLAT PATTERN

Im trying to create a sheet metal box using a flange tool, and take advantage on the corner seam. and when i use delete face or rip on one of the flange. My flat pattern gave me an incorrect result. What came wrong need help on this sir. thanks.

I can create a flat up till you do a rip ...

What is the purpose of the rips..

Why not just extrude / cut them away and then create a flat pattern?

I also don't understand why you done the rips.

You said you wanted to take advantage of the corner seam.

I have attached a printscreen where I have used the corner seam.

Is this something that you wanted?

I have not got an version of Inventor old enough to attach a .ipt for you to see.

I could do a screencast if this is something you wanted though.

Especially when a simple extrusion can get what he wants

Hi Mike,

This is a bug. I guess Inventor likes to fly so it builds itself a delta wing. I will work with the project team to understand the behavior better.

I think a few people will see what they can find a workaround

However I wouldn't use rip to remove these area's

Greetings @Anonymous I see that you are visiting as a new member to the Inventor Forum.
Welcome to the Autodesk Community!

Using Rip is much more difficult than Extrude so good effort, impressed you got it to work like you did!

Moving forward you'll want to use Rip for creating a long seam cut, primarily for a cylinder or rectangle for a flat pattern.

Here is a screencast showing a few different tips, cutting Distance using the Thickness parameter, cutting using the To and selecting a face.

I wouldn't use mirror unless you know the part will always be symmetrical. Alternatively you could create half the part and mirror the whole thing along the center to eliminate doing the Flange commands twice.

You can see I was checking where the XZ Plane was to use as the mirror plane, but instead had to create a Midplane between Two Planes.

On Sketch1 you would want to setup the middle of the rectangle at the Origin > Center Point for easy symmetrical use later on. Good habit to start.

i just dont get why rip/ cut/delete face fails when you remove one of the flange. i just find it easy to use but it doesn't follow the correct flat

Hi Johnson;

Here are two files of that very model for you to have a look at. One of them exhibits Flat Pattern problem (Part1_1) and another one does not. But in Part 1_2 a bit different method is used for creating a short flange. Maybe your team wants to look at these files. They are in IV2018 format.

@Anonymous using Rip for this type of feature isn't really the best practice to use.

It is not the intended function, if you think about a real world situation, a rip is when you cut a long length out of a material.

As for it not working in the flat pattern, that is something the program probably just has a limitation as there are better commands suited to doing this. The development team will look into this.

does the video @kelly.young posted get you the geometry that you are after?

The reason I ask is because I think there is a much easier way - but it is not clear to me that that example is the true design intent you are after.
