topic Using Centreline in sketch in Inventor Forum

I'm sketching a profile on a part. I can convert straight lines to centre lines, but cannot figure out how to do arcs.

If i second click on a straight line, the four primary options are Delete, Undo, Centreline and Construction. If do the same on a curve I get the same options but even when I click on Centreline and the box is checked, the appearance is the same.

Any comments? Thanks

Hi,

I am sorry, it seems that arc can't be the center line type, you can change to construction line for reference purpose.

Thanks

Hello, Robert!

A curve cannot be a centerline (obviously) only a line can... What is the purpose of this "centercurve"? Can you attach a .ipt file or screenshot for a better understanding of the task you attempt?

Thanks for the replies,

I was hoping to use it on the part drawing as the tool path without having to create new sketches to do this. As it happens usiig a centreline for the straight line causes as many problems when I try to dimension off it!!

Back to the drawing board (as they used to say!!

Go ahead and use the sketch curve on your drawing. You just change the line style on the drawing, not in the part sketch.

As far as dimensioning to a centerline, Inventor helpfully assumes that a centerline is actually the center of something and treats the dimension as a diameter. This makes dimensioning a revolve feature very easy. If you don't want a particular dimension to be a diameter, you toggle the centerline attribute off before you place it. Dimensions remain as they were placed, so you can turn the CL attribute on and off as often as you need to without affecting already placed dimensions.

Hope that helps,

Sam B

Inventor Professional 2018.1.2
Vault Workgroup 2018.0
Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit, SP1
