Design Assistant - won't let me rename the file

Hello,

i am trying to to change a file name with Design Assistant following the suggested steps from other posts, but i can't. When i right click in Action label i have only two choices available, Copy and Clear.

I'm using Inventor 2015.

This may not be the answer you want to hear, but, if Vault is not an option for you, just rename it in Windows explorer and call it a day. My company just yanked Vault out and after using it for some 6 years, I tried Design assistant and it is like going from Hershey's chocolate to the stuff they sell at Dollar General. I am not suffering with having to rename in explorer and searching for the new file.

@Cadmanto That's funny... (Chocolate statement)... Also I don't want to side track OP's requirement, but can you share why after 6 years you gave up Vault? You can private message me if you want. Just wondering what your struggles were with Vault.

@Anonymous Is this part used in an assembly? Is the part loaded into memory in Inventor (meaning is Inventor currently running)? If it belongs to an assembly, open the (top) assembly to rename it.

Mark, Oh, I love vault and have pushed it for 3.5 years here are my current company. Problem is, others around me that tried it and because the company wasn't sending them for training in it and my boss is ignorant (along with others) and went by their opinions and not mine. Calborately decided to remove it from out software usage choices when we recently upgraded to 2017. We are owned by a big brother company (which shall remain nameless) which others outside of our 4 walls use the pro version in other facilities. IT doesn't like managing it and overall, and again ignorantly speaking, thought I was a pain in the neck for keeping it around. So, I lost.

No, Inventor is not running in memory after i terminate the programm.

It is not part of an assembly. I tried to create another part (for example just a cylinder) and rename it, but i have the same results.

Is there any chance that the windows browser, which includes Greek words (meaning that my pc running windows 7 in greek Language), affect's it?

May I ask why this file is buried in numerous sub-folders from Inventor 2015 to Inventor 2014? Your folder structure doesn't make sense.

Also it appears that you are working on tutorial files, is that correct? Those files may be set to read only. Go into Windows, right mouse click on the file and select properties. Is the read only file attribute option selected?

Sorry just happened to print screen the wrong file.

As you can see the same happens in other parts, which arenot a part of an assembly.

Its been awhile since I used Design Assistant and really was thinking this late afternoon , but when it comes to a single file not related to anything you can't rename it using Design Assistant. Just rename the file using Windows Explorer.

Check if the status of the part or assembly is "Released".

If it is "Released", you cannot rename it.

Change it back to "Work in Progress".

Credit to @andries72QL3 for finding this solution.

I have also had this problem and none of these solutions worked worked for me. I am not using vault and need to rename the whole project, but all the options are greyed out in Design Assistant. Solution: Make a backup of "corrupted" project for safety reasons. Create a new assembly, place the "corrupted" assembly in this new assembly. Drag all contents from "corrupted" assembly one level up into new assembly (Promote). It should keep all constraints. Delete "corrupted" assembly out of new assembly and safe. It will unfortunately loose the smart function on the bolted connections, but its still easier to replace the bolted connection vs recreating the assembly.

It's about time design assistant allowed you to re-name multiple files simultaneously instead of one at a time ex.

A-001 to 100 to say B-001 to B-100. Having to rename each file individually is a real pain.
