Yes I can edit parts, add/remove from assembly in SolidWorks, just like in Inventor.

Hi, I am having some serious issues.
I have a multipart assembly made in the most up to date inventor program. I need to pass it off to someone using solid works to update and make final changes to the model. What file format or process will allow them to do this? Stp. Files seem to not be working it's just crashing on their program. Please help!

STEP should work, but it would probably be better to use Parasolid (*.x_b) as that is the native kernel for SolidWorks.

SolidWorks (of the correct version) can also open Inventor assembly and part files directly.

If you can attach STEP and/or Parasolid here - I can test them out.

Can you explain a bit about how you are doing the export?

I am seeing a lot of what I would consider extraneous details right down to balls and races of bearings and tumblers of locks?

The Parasolid opened fine for me in SolidWorks 2017 (I have 32Gig of RAM), but the STEP has been cranking for a while. I don't know if it will finish, but I am going to kill the process since the Parasolid worked.

Hi! There are quite a few options. As far as I know, SWX 2018 should be able to import INV 2018 or older releases files directly. Or, you can export INV files as Parasolid or Acis files. Or, you can export INV files as AutoCAD dwg with 3D solids. Or try to convince them to use INV.

Many thanks!

And if so, are you able to alter the model, such as dimensions adding or removing parts?
