How to View Translation Report (.XML) with Internet Explorer

Hello All,

I am using Windows 7 64-bit with Inventor 2012 and 2017 64-bit. When importing Mechanical Desktop 2009 files into Inventor 2012 I get a translation report with .xml file type that opens up with Internet Explorer, shown below (preferred).

When switching to Inventor 2017, on the same operating system, and running the Mechanical Desktop 2009 file import I get the same translation report file type (.xml) created. The difference is that when I click to open this file in Internet Explorer 11 I get code instead of the table report from 2012, shown below.

Has anyone had this issue, and if so how was it corrected so that you don't have to manually edit each file to be able to view it with Explorer (as shown in the first image)? Right now if I want to view the .xml file with Internet Explorer in table format I have to open the file with a text editor (Notepad) and add a line of code. The two images below show (TOP) the 2012 file that opens properly with Internet Explorer and (BOTTOM) the 2017 file that has a highlighted line of code added to allow it to open properly with Internet explorer.

Is there a config file or setting location within Inventor2017 or the Registry Editor that I can permanently change the translation report settings to create .xml reports that will open with Internet Explorer?

Hi! Could you try the following?

Go to Inventor 2017 -> Tools -> Application Options -> Save -> change the last combobox to "Embed translation report in document"

When changing that setting, the report is still created as an external file saved in the translation logs folder. No embedded file is created.

@Anonymous, By the way, would you please try to open htm file (C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\*.htm) rather than xml?

@Anonymous were you able to try either of the programs suggested to open the files with?

It should open the *.htm file located at C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\*.htm

When going to the folder C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\ there was no .htm file present.

I tried opening the file with the XML notepad editor. It displays the same format as with Internet Explorer (code instead of table format).

The import creates only an XML file. I have not been able to find a HTM file created from the import. I will try a few different things to see if I can change a setting to create one to test.

XML Notepad will only open XML files. There are settings for the viewing of files, either the Tree View or XSL Output.

I'm not too familiar with XML settings. Can you please explain how to change the settings?

Side note: When inventor creates the xml file, it seems to create the stylesheet (InvTransMDTLog.xsl) just fine, but does not add the line referencing the stylesheet to the xmf document.

In Inventor 2012 the line "<?xml-stylesheet type='text/xsl' href='InvTransMDTLog.xsl'?>" was added to each xml file created during import which allowed me to view it in table format with Internet Explorer.

In Inventor 2017 the line "<?xml-stylesheet type='text/xsl' href='InvTransMDTLog.xsl'?>" is missing from each xml file created during import not allowing me to view the file with Internet Explorer in table format.

If anyone can help describe how to change xml view settings and/or how to get inventor to automatically reference the stylesheet when creating xml files I would greatly appreciate the help.

You can try changing the setting within the Application>Save and change the "Embed translation report in document" to "Save translation report to external file."

See if that changes and gives you the "HTML" rather than only the "XML" report.

@blair I originally had the setting to create an external file which saved only an XML file. I also tried embedding the file to see if that would help but no file was created within the document for me to view.

It seems that there is either an intentional change from V2012, a bug, or a setting I'm not able to find to have the XML file include a reference to a style sheet so that I may view it the same as with V2012. I ran the import in both 2012 and 2017 and found the difference is 2017 was missing the line below:

<?xml-stylesheet type='text/xsl' href='InvTransMDTLog.xsl'?>

Manually adding this to the 2017 report file changed the viewing format to what I needed. Is there a setting within Inventor 2017 or a regedit change that can be done to have this automatically done during creation of the file?

Nothing that I remember, you could log the issue with ADSK Support.
