Will Autodesk certify non quadro cards?

I am pricing out a laptop to run Inventor, I have the choice to go with

	NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1060 6GB GDDR5 VRAM Pascal™ architecture GPU w/G-SYNC support
	NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1070 8GB GDDR5 VRAM Pascal™ architecture GPU w/G-SYNC support [add $339.00]
	NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 1080 8GB GDDR5X VRAM Pascal™ architecture GPU w/G-SYNC support - Requires 17.3" display [add $849.00]

probably will choose the 1070. I am hearing Inventor no longer needs quadro, so why wont autodesk certify it?

I have 3 GTX 1070's .... all work great ...

Also have a 1060 GTX

I do believe the cards are submitted ... kind of hard for Autodesk to keep up with ALL of the GTX cards that come out ...

then you have them by ASUS / MSI and others on top of it.

You have 1070 / 1070 Founders / 1070 Ti .... just way too many versions ....

I heard that Autodesk only certifies hardware sent to them. Also there are less quadro cards than there are gtx cards. Also I wouldn't count on seeing non workstation hardware being certified.

That being said most of my department is running 1060's now.

I agree with @mdavis22569. It's hard for any company to test every card for the amount of Autodesk software that's out. Not only is @mdavis22569 is an Expert Elite member on the Inventor forums but he has the same setup... so I would take his word on this.

ADSK requires the graphics drivers be "MicroSoft" certified. Since the move from OpenGL to Direct 3D about 10 years ago, and their move to "MicroSofts" certification standards, they haven't been hardware concerned.

There used to be a switch setting in Inventors Applications>Hardware that allowed you to select either OpenGL or Direct 3D for a couple of years. About release IV2008 the option had been removed and Inventor used only Direct 3D. At the same time it no longer required downloading a "certified" list file to be installed on your machine.

About this time we quite using "Quadro" cards and moved to Nvidia's GTX cards. Surprisingly there seems to be more people with graphics issues and Quadro based cards than GXT "gaming" graphics cards.

If you search "How Fast is My Computer" on this forum, you will find Neal's post with great insight on hardware for Inventor as well as test results.

There's more to it than only certifying whats sent to them, I can certify cards... I have the program and routines for doing so but without breaking NDA it's difficult to explain why GeForce cards are not on an official list... I suppose I can say the should be on the list, but they're not because of "reasons".

Needless to say, Autodesk *DO SUPPORT* GeForce cards... they just can't add them to a certified hardware list. The confusion is immense, they know it, it's just one of those not-very-big-on-the-priority list that nobody wants to take ownership of and deal with.

So yes, get a GeForce card, you'll get absolutely no benefit from a Quadro card for Inventor.

Just note there are diminishing returns above a 1060, I have a 1070 and a 1080Ti and there's zero difference between the two for Inventor.

@mdavis22569 what's your high score again? I pulled a 13.2 with a stock 8700K, with an overclock I reckon I could peak 15!

God dammit I hate the account management on this site. I sign into the subscription centre using my work account and it keeps me signed in to that account when I go over to the forums, it's probably quite useful but also really annoying!

I pulled a 15.47 I believe was the best ....

I can't run it on my Alienware unfortunately ..due to the video card set up.

I have a new PC build planned with the i7- 6c ore too ..and probably a 1080ti ... haven't decided on the card yet

On AlienWare laptops, there is a setting within the Nvidia control panel to specify which application will use either the onboard Intel graphics card or the "above-board" hi-performance Nvidia card.

I found this out on my AlienWare Mx17 that I used to lug around. It's a power saving device to improve battery life. Unfortunately the default is for all applications to use the Intel on-board.

Does anyone know if the NVidia GTX 1080 Ti works well with Inventor 2019 - has been approved?

Not showing on the standard website.

I am about to place the order and need to know quickly if I can as I have a Demo coming up and need the extra performance.

I've had a 1080Ti since the day it was launched, it works perfectly.

You'll not get any extra performance out of it though over a 1070 or 1080. But the story behind that has been explained many times over already on the "How fast is your Inventor PC Really" thread.

Can you post screenshot - I just searched around on my Alienware and cannot find this in the NVIDA Control Panel.

I'll try and find it tonight. My Alienware has been retired from active duty. You should just be able to RMB on the display to bring up the Nvidia control panel.

I knew how to get in the control panel, just curious what setting you saw.

On mine AFAIK it always uses the Nvidia when I am connected to power source in which case it may or may not switch to the integrated graphics. I have not found a reason why sometimes it switches but usually does not.

There should be a setting for Power. I believe that you can set it to use the Nvidia card for applications as well as a power setting.

The only real benefit to getting a Quadro Card is for the drivers specific to workstations instead of gaming machines, whatever differences there are, and Quadro cards can have a lot more Vram than geforce cards, but if you can get by with just a few gigs of ram on your video card, than geforce will work just fine.

The Vram amount is dependent on the amount of 3d graphics you're looking to render at once, the number of and resolution of your displays, and the extra Vram is needed for simulation, engineering, and rendering work.
