Part list grouped items with single item number

Hi all,

The scenario I have is that i have put a part list on a drawing using the structured all level BOM. then i use the group settings to group some of the components that are the same in different assemblies that I have expanded in the parts list. I un-tick the Display Group Participants.

Once grouped i then renumber the hole parts list. This leaves me with the grouped item in one row, but a number of item numbers for the one row.

So, say the item that was grouped is in two assemblies or appears on the parts list twice the item box will display: 1, 2.

I would like it to only display 1, and that to be reflected by the balloons.

Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure why you are doing all that work in the first place and I've never needed to do such in Inventor BUT I put out my comments anyways if you don't mind.....

Sounds like it should be a subassembly set to inseperable or purchased or something like that to start with....

I would need to know the specifics/details of why you even need to group these parts in the first place..

What reason are you grouping them and why isn't your assemblies setup up initially with that specific requirement..

Is it a purchased assembly?

An inseparable assembly (weldment,etc..)?

Now I know that many times companies have "goofy requests" and sometimes you just need to do whats being asked.. So I'm assuming this may be one of those moments.. Boss wants X... Software doesn't do X.. I need to figure out a "hack" to get to X because its easier than to fix the boss 🙂

We have started grouping fasteners in there own assembly files for ease of management on large assemblies. These files are purchase items and are generated through the contents centre.

So, when we produce a parts list we do not want duplicates items in it. If the we produce the parts list from the main assembly and use structured all level BOM for the part list. Expand fastener assemblies to show all the fasteners. we can have the same fastener listed a number of times. So, for it to be only listed once they are grouped, but the issue is they are still given numerous item number depending on how many instances there were to start with.

I can appreciate that the model structure with fasteners in separate assemblies is causing this problem, but that solves another one. The simplest solution would be to assign a single item number to a grouped item, which is the original question.

If its not possible then we have to accepted the same item being listed a number of times in a parts list with different item numbers. Or change our assembly structure.

A solution has been found. This works in our situation, but might not work for others.

In our situation we have created assemblies to hold groups of fasteners that are common within our assembly. When creating a part list from the top level assembly we were struggling to get similar fasteners to be listed(grouped) on one line and with one item number in the part list.

To allow us to achieve this we found that if you set the sub assemblies holding the fastener to PHANTOM. This gets rid of the assembly and promotes everything held in it to the first level on the Structured BOM.
