Section / Break View Question

I need to apply a BREAK VIEW to most of my Section Views. The problem I run into is the Base View automatically gets a Break View applied to it and I need the Base View to remain unchanged. I can create a second Base View off of my paper and then Section it and apply the Break View to it. It seems like it's not the right way to go about this but I'm hoping that there's something I'm missing.

I've attached a sample sheet to show what I'm trying to accomplish. In View #1 I wouldn't apply the section view and then I could move the Section View with the Break in it from View #2 above View #1.

I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks!

You are not going to break the link of section to the base view and you method will work. I have created a screencast using a more recent solution. Take a look and see if it suits better.

Hi Steve and John,

John's workflow is pretty cool. There is an easier way to do that without having to create 3rd view. Before you create the break view, edit the section view -> Display Option -> uncheck "Break" in Cut Inheritance -> Ok. The break view you create will not apply to the base view.

Hi all,

also, you may notice in the Break view dialog an option:

[X] Propagate to parent view

If unchecked, the break will not be propagated to the base view.

Or I suppose Autodesk could simply change the checkmark to off by default. Y'know - like every CAD (and drafting well before) standard that ever existed. SMH!!!

I chuckle to myself every day about the work-causing "features" in this software...

Efficiency does not seem to be very high on Autodesk list. They like to focus on the Bells and whistles that appeal to all, but used by virtually nobody because it's not efficient. (Should I mention iLogic? Great bragging idea, but virtually no one knows how to use it)

Regarding programming for Inventor, my response above was after one of our in-house developers looked at a programatic way to turn the OEM action of the view break command. This, since our entire department complains about it. His comment on iLogic? If you're going to spend time on a language that is basically VB.net - why not just learn VB.net? Can't say I disagree with him. And I agree with you - iLogic sure isn't Autolisp, or even Python from an ease-of-learning aspect.

my "propogate to parent view" is greyed out and not able to be clicked. is that bc i have already created all of my views?

do i have to start over?

I want a break in the main (first parent view) but NOT in the detail and section views that are taken from that main view.

OK I STARTED OVER WITH MY VIEWS AND ITS STILL NOT WORKING...

I DO NOT WANT THE BREAK IN THE CHILD VIEW (THE ACTUAL DETAIL VIEW)

BUT I DO WANT IT IN THE PARENT VIEW.

Hi,

There are couple of conditions when Propagate to Parent view is not editable - e.g. when the Cut Inheritance of Break back to the child view is disabled - isn't this your case? Try Edit child view and check Display Tab - Cut Inheritance.

unfortunately, my cut inheritance is greyed out as well.

i'm not sure what i'm doing when creating the detail view to not be able to edit this.

the "edit view" drawing tab popup is of the detail a view (not the parent view).

I see, Detail views must inherit from Base. But the Propagate to Parent view should be enabled in Break dialog as well. In 2022 the option was also disabled when Parent view is Cropped (this improved in 2023.1) - but this also does not look to be the case, am I righ? Thanks

My propagate to parent option works when needing to break the detail view and not the parent view.

I think that is correct. I cannot crop a view that has a break in it, so no I do not have any views cropped. (parent or child views).
