Hi! Measure tool was removed from 2D drawing starting from Inventor 2018. The reason why it was removed is because of ambiguity of the measurement. Measure tool by itself is for 3D. Within the drawing environment, the view geometry is actually like a camera view of the 3D model. When you measure from one point to another, resultant measurement can be in 3D. If you are looking for the 2D measurement, you can create drawing dimensions so that they are measured in 2D space.

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson;

I am with Robert on that one. How can I document the length of the loop? It doesn't matter what for. Say, for simplicity - I just need it. Apart from creating a bunch of dimensions in the sketch, add them all up and create a User Parameter which reflects the total length - I couldn't think of any other, simpler solution. Or is there one?

Cheers,

Unfortunately - from the beginning the suggestion of yours didn't have much of a value. Since it leaves a great deal of opportunity to create a user error. And that's what I was trying to point out to you in my previous post.

So tricky, in fact... that I still can't find it. In v.2018, I could right-click and select Loop from the pop-up menu. It doesn't work in v.2019.

I use this all the time when working with roller chain and sprockets. My sketch in the chain model consists of two arcs (drawn at the pitch diameters of the two sprockets) and two tangent lines connecting them. The length of these two arcs plus the tangent lines are my chain length, which obviously needs to be a number equally divisible by the pitch of the chain. Then this loop is offset to the inside and outside to represent the height of the chain, and then this region is extruded to the chain width.

In the attached screenshot, you can see the menu that pops up when I right-click on the line.... no option to "Select Other." What am I missing here?

Someone please, PLEASE explain how I can measure this loop.

Hi

Note to Autodesk -

Makes it possible to measure loop directly

And make it a part of dimensioning on loops. (as on the other 3D program) 🙂

Please.....

Hi Robert,

For complicated profile like this, would not you create a dxf and send to cnc ? in that case, you don't need a details of the loop length. When you have complex profile plate like this, I usually prefer exporting face to dxf and on idw just give overall dimensions. I have not come across need to calculate such loop or cutout. Whether you have your own manufacturing unit with cnc or outsourcing to cut it elsewhere, dxf is usually created using export face as.

Its too much time consuming. Maybe I am going tangential but that will be my approach.

Regards,

Yash

Hi! Measure Loop should work. You simply need to right-click -> Select Other -> find the loop selection, when Measure tool is active.

Unfortunately, there is no loop dimension yet. I have heard about the request but it has not been implemented. Please feel free to report it as an idea on Inventor Ideas forum or vote for an existing one.

Many thanks!

I do not see this as an improvement. Autodesk loves 'fixing' what ain't broke.
