Is there a way to sort a multi level BOM to match the way it is sorted in the sub assembly? I want the parts in the first pic to be in the same order that they are in the second pic.

Hi Andrew,

Unfortunately, I don't think there is an easy way to keep parent assembly BOM the same order as sub-assembly.

sorry for that.

Thanks!

I didn't think so, but I wanted to check. I did find this idea and saw that it was at first accepted and then changed to future consideration. This needs to be fixed, as I consider it a bug that the bom wouldn't be in the same order wherever it is called out.

https://forums.autodesk.com/t5/inventor-ideas/assembly-bom-propagate-item-number-to-children/idi-p/4571949

@andrewiv wrote:

This needs to be fixed, as I consider it a bug ...

One thing to be careful about when calling something a bug is it is only a bug if it is not working as designed. In this case I'm guessing it is working as designed and just not working as expected.

Why is this distinction important, well often a user reports a "bug", and that report gets handed up and around until it reaches the devloper who investigates, sees it working as designed, and then closes the ticket on that issue. And there ends the life history of your feedback. Whereas it if that same feedback was characterized as an improvement request it (hopefully) gets handled in a different manner.

Anyway, that just comes from my personal experience of calling something a bug and having the issue "closed" and the discussion ended, because it was mis-characterized by me at the beginning.

But I agree that this would be a useful improvement and it looks like I've already voted for that idea in the past as well.

I hope this helps.
Best of luck to you in all of your Inventor pursuits,
Curtis
http://inventortrenches.blogspot.com

I know this is an old thread now, but has this been addressed yet?

We are experiencing this issue on Inventor 2023. For some reason I thought that in our company's previous Inventor version (2020) you were able to pull through the sub assembly numbering into the parent assembly.

Hi Ian,

The status quo persists. Inventor BOM is Part Number-based, aggregated BOM. This means the BOM data comes from the BOM in each unique subassembly BOM. The item numbers only persist within the BOM in the particular assembly.

Many thanks!
