Why is the Basic New Part template, Standard (in).ipt opening as metric?

Inventor 2022.

The basic templates new part command is creating a part with centimeter units from an inch part template. How is this possible when Configure Default Template window is set to inches and the template itself is set to inches?

Are you using Projects?

If yes, is your Project set up with the Default path for Templates?

Here is what I suspect is happening.

1. Inventor is not locating a valid template in mapped location.

In this case Inventor uses some sort of "failsafe" template that is in cm units.

2. Your default Inch template has somehow become overwritten.

If this is the case, start a New Part.

Go to Tools>Document Settings and set as desired.

Go to Save As>Save Copy as Template to overwrite the incorrect template.

I am pinging @johnsonshiue as I have seen him answer this problem here many times and I might have missed something.

Edit: You might also run the Inventor Reset Utility.

Hi Adam and JD,

I am not aware of an issue like that. The English templates should have inch as the unit and ANSI as the standard by default. Try getting a new set of templates (Tools -> App Options -> File -> Configure Default Templates).

Please also share the English template here. I can use our internal debug tool to check and see when it was changed.

The mapped location for templates in the project is C:\Vault\System\2022\Inventor\Template

This location is the advanced template path as seen on the home screen.

I opened the default template part file, Standard (in).ipt from the public documents path the one shown in the first group of screen shots. The units are set correctly to inch.

Is the Basic template location different from the default template location set in Application Options? In other words, where would I Save Copy As Template, to replace the Basic template?

I checked the Configure Default Templates and the units are set correct.

And I’m uploading the standard part file from

C:\Users\Public\Documents\Autodesk\Inventor 2022\Templates\en-US\English

Do you have a template in your folder called "Standard.ipt", without a unit designation?

If so, Inventor may be using that one instead of the "Standard (in).ipt" that you have been checking so far.

Hi! I think John may be right. You might be checking Standard.ipt, not Standard (in).ipt. The one you attached shows unit in inch.

To refresh the template. Go to Tools -> App Options -> File -> Configure Default Templates -> select a metric standard and a unit -> Ok. Repeat the same process bug select English standard and inch unit.

No, the folder as shown in the image above only has the “Standard (in).ipt” The template folder location as shown in the Application Options is in the “English” folder inside of the public documents folder. So, I don’t know where the centimeter designation is coming from.

Hello.

The Configure Default Template is the solution. I configured the default template to be Millimeters then configured again switching back to Inches. Here is what I observed using the Configure Default Template button:

Saves a copy of the current template set. All the standard part and assembly files are copied to the “OldTemplates” folder. This is copied to 2 Template locations.
1. Public Documents
2. Project template location
Copies the original template set from the “English” folder of the Public Documents folder. All the standard part and assembly files are copied to 2 Template locations.
1. Public Documents
2. Project template location

Conclusion

Creating a new part from the Basic area of the home screen now creates a new part with the inch designation. This still leaves the mystery of where the centimeter units’ designation was coming from.
