Well Hello everyone!!! I have spend just about all day trying to make this thing and can not figure out the correct buttons to press. Can someone please help me!? It is basically a modified torus however i have tried to build it in 2d then use revolve but i cant seem to change the center axis to leave a hole in it. I have also played with free-form but the problem is this will be a ball-and-socket set-up so it needs to be more precise. Thank you in advance!
kelly.young has edited your subject line for clarity: Very Noob

Hi! Is this a school assignment? If yes, please talk to your teacher or teaching assistant or your classmates. All I can say is that what you want to do is highly doable in any professional-grade CAD systems including Inventor. Based on the way you ask the question, I don't think you have reviewed basic tutorials. Please take a look at the following page.

Many thanks!

Instead of struggling to get the hole included in your revolve feature, why not add the hole as a separate feature after the revolve? There's no need to pile everything into one feature.

Do I have to great a construction line, or something?

Your main misunderstanding isn't that you don't know how to "move the center axis over." Your misunderstanding is that you think you need to do that at all, when you really don't. Whether there is a hole in the part or not, the center axis should still be in the center.

If you did move the center axis in some way, then revolve about it, all you would have is the same shape offset from the origin instead of centered on it. Instead, think about the shape of the profile. Think about what that part would look like if you cut it in half. Draw half of that (the portion on one side of the centerline) and revolve it.

The profile is not required to touch the centerline. Look at the sketches in @Anonymous's screenshots, and pay particular attention to where the centerline is. He shows an example very much like what you need to do.

ipt file included but i still can not figure out how to change the center axis the revolve uses. For example i cant get it off of the "1 inch" i need the "center" of the revolve action to be moved over .750" to create a 1.5" hole. I do appreciate the work around of cutting hole in center afterwards but i still would like to learn the "proper" way for future use. just starting on this project and i have a lot to learn.

yes everything you explained was exactly what i needed thank you thank you thank you for the video. the unfortunate bit is that it was supposed to revolve .750" off of the 1" line not and an axis thru the 3" and 1" line. more of a doughnut or torus and less handle or funnel. the drawing is a cross section of one side of doughnut. also in several videos i saw that they were saying to not use the starting point because it will add a constraint? However after watching you change all the constraints i don't see an issue plus i like that it helps with symmetry. now i just need to watch the video several more times to track the buttons you used to move center line. sorry again for the 8 constraints that you had to erase. fifth drawing if many more to come .

@slidewayz247 wrote:

... I do appreciate the work around of cutting hole in center afterwards but i still would like to learn the "proper" way for future use.

Cutting the hole afterwards is not a workaround; it's a different way to create the part, and in some cases, a better way. If the hole is meant to be threaded, or to accept a standard fastener, then making it a separate feature is much better than including it in the revolve.

Imagine changing from a straight through-hole to a blind, threaded countersunk hole. One way involves changing some settings in a dialog box, the other way means opening your sketch and adding a lot of lines, possibly accidentally messing up your outer profile. And this doesn't even touch on what it might do to a drawing.

There are many ways to model most objects, and the 'proper' way depends to a significant degree on what you intend to do with the model, what kinds of changes may be needed in the future.

ok i get it now. I just meant that the hole feature seemed like the easier route and i needed the hard way so i can learn more.

I feel so fantastically ignorant posting here since everyone seems to have gotten the wrong impression on my part. I sincerely from the bottom of my heart appreciate the patients and willingness from everyone to teach me and correct me. But for the record THIS is actually what i'm trying to build but now i am trying to change the part on the center on the disc to flatten out to match vertebra but now that i figured out how to do constraints i cant seems to undue them lol....
