Hi guys,

Reading through the posts I couldn't help but to think - there is much ado about nothing. How difficult is it to introduce a Work point in the centre of the square hole and then use that point to constrain the centreline of a round pin? Just like in the attached IV2018 files.

Cheers,

I'm going to assume you meant round "pin" to square "hole"..

But there are also other assumptions I could make too as you really didn't provide sufficient information to state the problem clearly..

Assuming round pin in square hole then....

There are multiple ways depending on the size of the parts and the location of work/origin features..

If the square holes width is the same as the diameter of the pin then a tangent constraint could be used..

You could also use the symmetry constraint from 2 walls of the square hole and the centered origin planes of the round pin/hole.

can you provide an example of the 2 parts you want to constrain so an exact answer can be given?

@Anonymous

As @mcgyvr says, there could be a number of solutions to this. Personally I'm envisioning two parts, one with a square hole, and the other with a circular hole, that need to be assembled with some sort of shaft?

My suggestion would be to place an image of the two holes, in context, so we can suggest the best way (and maybe some alternatives) to help you along.

Take a screen shot (maybe use the snipping tool?), and when you reply use the photos tool an the tool bar above the reply text window. This will place the image right in your message, instead of attaching it. That makes it much easier for everyone to see without having to download the image first. Hope we can help!

I tend to make a work axis at the center of any square holes or obround slots.

http://help.autodesk.com/view/INVNTOR/2017/ENU/?guid=GUID-045A1EA5-DCEF-4998-B832-DB2B2C8CF7F5

I place a sketch point at the center of the extrusion sketch and the sketch surface to define the work axis.

Use a mate constraint between the round hole axis and the work axis. Add a second constraint to define the distance between the two parts and a third to control rotation about the hole axis.

Hello @Anonymous here is a quick showing one way to accomplish centering a round object to the center of a rectangular shape.

Hope that helps!

Although the question has a solution, I think it is simpler and faster to use a Joint of the Offset Origin type. In the animation I show you how it works. Cheers

I agree. I find it odd that when creating a joint you can use the center of a square extrusion as a point, but not the center of a square hole. There are obviously workarounds, but they are all time consuming when it should really be built into the joint command.
