Disable Fast Open, remove Open Documents in Session

Moving from '16 to '18 over the next couple of weeks. There are a few of us in our group that switch between projects relatively often and have historically unchecked the Fast Open option so that we wouldn't have to restart inventor to change project .ipj's. Restart is required because you can't switch projects if there Open Documents in Session. It appears, after an hour or so of searching, that the option to disable Fast Open is gone, is this true? Can I have it back, pretty please?

Hello,

You are right, the option "Enable Quick File Open" was removed in application option -> file tab from Inventor 2018 since it's useless now. This option was added to speed up large assembly open on Windows XP. It's replaced by the disk caching that's built into Win 7 and later operating systems.

Hi! I could be wrong but I don't recall the association between "Enable Fast Open" option and switching project without closing. You don't need to restart Inventor in order to activate a new project. But, you do need to close all documents within the session before doing so.

In past, some files were not completely unloaded due to corruption or bugs. I have rarely seen this kind of behavior on more recent releases. As long as all documents are closed, you can switch to a new project. I don't recall it has anything to do with "Enable Fast Open" option.

Library iParts and their children, in particular, do not completely unload. Silly to remove that option IMO.

Certainly, here are the steps.

Switch from Project.ipj to Library.ipj (if no docs are hanging in the current session)

Find and open the iPart factory that needs attention. These are typically very large factories, 150 to 1500 children.

Check out and edit the factory.

Save factory.

Open assembly that contains all factory children (sometimes more than one assembly depending on number of children).

Check out all children.

Update all children.

Save all children.

Check in all children.

Close assembly.

Docs in session are shown in the lower left corner.

Must close Inventor session to change back to Project.ipj.

I will record a screen cast of the issues once I get done with that I'm working on now.

Hi! I don't think you need to record a video. I am familiar with the workflow. The behavior sounds file specific. To prove my point. Try this. Before you close the assembly, activate LOD:All Comp Suppressed and save. Close the assembly. Can you switch to a non-Library project?

I can attempt that workflow after current work is out of the way.

I can say that in my 2018 pre-migration testing, every library iPart I've encountered leaves docs in session without fail.

Followed this workflow and no change, docs are still in Session after closing.

An update to 2018.3 corrected the issue.
