Inventor 2018 Spring Movement With Positional Representation

Hi All,

I am working on assembly requiring spring to expand and retract as the position changes. I have done a lot of them with cylinders / rams as they have definite open and closed centres pre-defined. 1 am attaching a 3d pdf of an assembly and you can see the spring is lying free in space. when the round plate with holder moves down, spring needs to stretch. Spring goes in the boomerang shaped plate. I need to know how to extend spring pictorially and show position reps in both situation when round plate is up (retracted) and when its down (Extended).

Thank you for help. So basically I need to create 2 virtual plate and make them to work like RAM / cylinder by constraining them ? What if the motion of spring in not same plane. as you can see in pdf blue plate rotates around axis and other end is fixed.

Do I model the spring in extended position or retracted ?

Hi! The ability to change shape between PosRep states is not yet supported (with only exception in flexible cable in Cable and Harness environment). In each PosRep state, the geometry has to be the same while the component position can be different.

I have seen some users using iAssembly for this purpose. But, there are other limitations too. Depending on how you want to consume your PosRep, iAssembly may or may not work for you. Please feel free to share an example what you are working on. Forum experts will be able to guide you through best options.

Hi Johnson,

I have submitted 3d pdf....which should show my spring is not regular spring. But I can remove unrequired parts to show just relevant part and their correlation. it is mechanical spring with hooks at either end. I think from videos I saw, I need to design the spring to max position and then make it as adaptive. Will the joint feature be useful here ? please see attached files for clarity.

I have constraint one end of spring to anchor...but the other end is short of reaching the hole in blue part. if I extend spring size to meet other end and make it adaptive, will it work...Remember I need to show the different position on drawing with overlay view.

Hi! Correct! You will need to make the spring part adaptive. However, the adaptive part would not change between two PosReps. I have to say there is no workflow currently allowing you do what you are looking for in PosReps or Overlay views. You will need two different datasets (assemblies) to show the spring in two different states.

Thanks for prompt reply. So I make 2 springs, one with retracted and other with extended lengths and use view representations to hide one of them...??

Hi! I don't think you would be able to use PosRep to show the spring deformation. You will need to use two separate assemblies or iAssembly.
