Inventor Link Part Parameters Within Assembly To Automatically Change Size

Hi All,

Im currently doing some work fro school and having a problem linking my ipt models in the Assembly.

im wondering if anyone can help me? the issue I seem to be having is not so much the link part, it is more along the lines of linked part having multiple sizes and having them change automatically once the size is changed on the main part?

im at the point of being able to link the 2 parts with the parameters, 1 being able to drop down and have multiple values and the other included but not able to change??

the value im looking for is to be able to make the plate 150 larger than post length and the plate width 50 larger than the post width. AND for them to change automatically when I change the post dimensions...

Thanks a million for the help!!postplateassembly kelly.young has edited your subject line for clarity: Paramaters Link

This will need advanced knowledge to understand all that links between parts and how to connect them.

Could you ask your teacher about all this? Maybe it's easier to explain the mechanism than in a forum.

Hi @Anonymous,

So linking parameters has some limitations, but at one point in inventor it was all we had, and this point though I think the better approach would a simple iLogic rule that pushes parameter values from the assembly to the parts. This is pretty easy to set up if you're interested in exploring that method.

What version of Inventor are you using?

Hi William,

I agree with all experts said here. One thing you should ask yourself is that is the parametric relationship particular within this assembly? Or, the relationship exist no matter where the parts will be used or placed? If it is former, I think iLogic would be a better route. If it is latter, you may consider using Excel table or a skeletal part.

Many thanks!

Hi @Curtis_W and all other experts,

my assembly is made of 2 sheet metal parts that would change in function of the change in the 2 assembly parameters (please have a look to the screenshot). I already know that I need to make around 150 different configurations of the assembly (different height and lengths) and send the dxf flat patterns for laser machine. What would be the best workflow in Inventor (2020) to do it. Ideally I was thinking about something like a Iassembly where the assembly parameters where every time you add a new combination of parameters L and H it add a new line of both parts table (iparts). After finishing all the configurations a ilogic rule to generate and export all flat patterns. Is it too complex? Or there is any other way? Also it would be nice to have the possibility in drawing to have a unique view and automatically a table with the dimensions of all the configurations.

Hi! If I understood your requirement correctly, I don't believe iPart is the right solution here. You want to dynamically change iPart factories and members. This is not iPart was designed to work. iPart was designed for generating library components.

I think the best workflow right now is to use iLogic rule at the top-level assembly to drive parametric change in individual sub components. Then use iLogic Design Copy to capture the configuration.

Many thanks!
