Inventor Current Design View Representation Is Locked On Saved Model

I have created a LHS cam plate then derived the (mirrored) RHS cam plate from it. Then I added a bearing boss to the LSH plate with the bearing lands bored into it (arrowed).

When I save the modified file I get the error message shown. I assume this is because of the derived model.

How do I unlock this file so I can save it? My trusty textbook doesn't even contain the work "unlock".

In the default Inventor part template, the Master design view is locked by default (checked). This is why you are getting the message. Since you have made a view change, Inventor cannot save to a locked design view. All you have to do is right click on the View icon in the Model panel and create a new view that will automatically be created unlocked. Best thing to do is to create an Inventor template for yourself that includes an unlocked view. I use one with a "Default" view which is marked as active in my template.

By the way, I am using Inventor 2019.1 that has three other standard design views which you may not have.

Your file would save just fine, but changes you made to the view rep (section view is the only thing I can think of at the moment) would not. No risk to your model at all.

All I know is that I received the error message when I clicked File --> Save.

There is no option in AI2018 for File --> Save --> Design View Rep.

So, that message means that while the file would be saved (all model geometry, etc.), changes that you made to the currently active Design View Rep would not be saved because it was locked. The Design View Reps are part of the part file, not saved separately.

Example: if you create a half section view while the Master DVR is active, this error message would pop up when you tried to save. If you then acknowledge and save anyway, all is good with the file. However, the next time you open the file, it will not show the section view-- that was lost because the DVR under which you created it was locked. So, you just have to activate a different DVR-- now your section view is saved and the next time you open the file, there it is.

...but the parts still can not be dragged around, so the whole assembly is essentially frozen in place. How does one re-enable moving parts around?

Hi! The behavior you described does not sound right to me. Also, it is not the same issue as discussed here. Could you share an example and start a new thread? I would like to understand the behavior better.
