Hi there

What would be the quickest way to convert a 3d dwg into an IPT or STP file? (file attached)

Thank you very much

Victor

Hi! You can easily import the dwg file to Inventor. Go to Open -> change file filter to AutoCAD dwg -> select the file -> Options -> Import -> Open -> go through the DWG Import wizard -> make sure you check "3D Solids" in the last dialog -> Ok.

You will get an assembly with 7 solid parts.

Many thanks!

This does not appear to work in Inventor 2018 even though help files say it should.

If I open the file (setting filter to DWG), Inventor simply opens the DWG file. I want a ipt sketch format.

If I create a blank part file and try to Import the DWG,(3D Model >> Import) Inventor tells me it does not support this feature.

If I create a blank part file, enter sketch mode and try to Import the DWG,(3D Model >> Import) the Import option is grayed out.

If I go Manage>>Insert>>Import and select the DWG file, I get the same "does not support error"

You have replied to a thread that has already been solved.

It would have been better to start a new thread and link to this thread for reference.

What is the source of your dwg file?

When I open it in AutoCAD there is no modelspace geometry.

There is paperspace geometry, but I cannot select it (been 10 years since I used AutoCAD).

My guess is that geometry is inferior in any case.

There is a Gear Generator Design Accelerator in Inventor (but takes a bit more knowledge to get true Involute toothform).

What is your Design Intent for this model?

When opening the .dwg inside of Inventor, it looks like someone had maybe placed an Autocad sketch of the gear in a draft view (sketch view of the drawing), so when you open the drawing inside of Autocad, you can't select anything in paper space. But, go to model space and type in Insert. You can get the gear as a block.

Hi Allan,

The dwg file you attach is an Inventor dwg file, not an AutoCAD dwg file. Inventor prohibits an Inventor dwg file from being imported or linked. It simply does not work.

The quickest workflow is to open the Inventor dwg file and edit the gear sketch (draft view). Then copy the sketch geometry and paste it to a part sketch.

Or, you will need to export the Inventor dwg file as an AutoCAD dwg file. Then you can import it.

Many thanks!

Thanks for your quick reply.
The file was originally a DXF file. I brought it into Inventor, removed
some dimensional guidelines and then saved it as a DWG.

This gear is intended for a stage prop (24" in diameter).

Yes, I will get into the gear generator instead.
Inventor has never been great in handling DXF coming in or going out.

Thanks again for your response.
