Good Inventor Font For Accurately Depicting Machine Engraving Of Text

Split from Friday pictures 8-31-'18 to new thread for further discussion.

Anyone have a good font for accurately depicting machine engraving of text? Plenty of nice looking fonts out there, but none that I've found so far that are uniform width and circular ends.

I vote for continuing the weekly topics-- unless it depends on my contributions (!).

@SBix26, I have a font on my pc called "ISOCPEUR" which might be what you're looking for.

I don't know if it's a standard windows/Inventor font or if it was installed as part of my adobe software though...

Also, Everyone: thank you for your feedback, i'll review it all again and see what i can come up with.

ISOCPEUR is installed with Inventor (or maybe just with AutoCAD, I'm not certain), and I have used it for engraving purposes, but it's only an approximation. Strokes are not actually uniform width, and ends are rounded but not circular.

I also found one on line that is a bit closer called Volkswagen, but I seem to have lost it in my transition to retirement and replacement hard drive...

@SBix26 are you trying to get this for CAM stuff or just want to show it within Inventor more accurately?

Here is a good video on how to use the single line text to then program with CAM. There are many single line fonts like Proxy you can use.

I know that in Fusion360 you can use .shx text to have the 2D CAM path follow for engraving as well.

@kelly.young No, this is purely for model appearance. @Anonymous' beautiful rendering prompted my question, because the text labels on his model could only be produced by EDM or something even more expensive, and I'm sure that isn't the intent. Also, a font that would really look like engraved text would also consist of more arcs and lines, and fewer splines, making it perform better, too.

It would be wonderful if Inventor 2020 could include a couple of "engraving" fonts (serif & sans, perhaps) just to make Mark's models (and mine) look even better...

thanks for the nice feedback

@kelly.young absolutely nailed it 100% with the video explanation. The actual manifold

font used to engrave looks very boxy (isocp or simplex) but defiantly a single line font.

If i remember next time i speak with our supplier I will ask what they use and post a pic.

A couple of free fonts i think might fit the bill:

I haven't tried them with Inventor as i didn't download any of them, but the TGL font seems the most appropriate as the description states it's based on a DIN norm and it's listed as a technical font.

---quick update---

Downloaded TGL-font and Text-me-one, the TGL has self intersecting and does not extrude in Inventor, text-me-one does work but does not have an entirely consistent linewidth.

If it's just for visual purposes i don't think it matters that much, just like the ISOCPEUR font but if you have other intentions it might not be what you're after either.

a quick search on "volkswagen serial ttf" will bring you plenty of leads towards that one, using it for years....

anyone experience with these fonts and creating the model like it's milled with a round tip?

for now, i have used the emboss function but i would like to figure out how i can create the "milled with a round tip - effect"

for hygienic parts i can't mill with a square angle. let's say it's a round tip of 2mm and i'm milling 0.5mm depth.

I just use the single line Simplex Font with HSM milling and it works great..
