Inseparable components in PartsOnly BOM view

Hi all,

I have a aluminum frame with part number 101. This is an assembly with 4 additional sub-assembly components with part number from 101A through 101D. All these sub-assembly components have only purchased components which are set in BOM structure as purchased. All sub-assembly components (101A-101D) are set as inseparable. Main component 101 is part of another assembly 100 which is set to normal. Assembly 100 is set to Normal in BOM structure.

In drawing, when I place PartsList table as "Parts Only" for assembly 100, PartsList table shows all sub-assemblies (101A-101D) and all purchased components within these sub-assemblies. But assembly 101 does not show up (maybe this is how it should be since BOM structure for this component is set to Normal). Then, I change BOM structure of assembly 101 to Inseparable and now this assembly shows in PartsList table but sub-assemblies (101A-101D) and purchased components do not show up. Is this how it should be? I expected to see components 101, 101A-101D and all purchased complements in PartsList table as well in this case.

Hierarchy of my design looks like this:

100-->101-->101A-->PC1 (purchased component)

PC2

PC3

PC4

101B-->PC5

PC6

etc.

101C-->PCs

101D-->PCs

102

103

Details 102 and 103 are parts not assemblies.

If we outsource detail 101 for build, I just change BOM structure to Purchased and none of the sub-components show up in "Parts Only" PartsList BOM because I do not have to order them. But, if we are building detail 101 in-house then I change this to "Normal" (actually, shouldn't it be "Inseparable"?) so all components show in "Parts Only" PartsList table.

My understanding is if BOM structure of an assembly is set to "Normal" it should not show up in PartsOnly PartsList table. But, if it is "Inseparable" it should show up with all other inseparable sub-assemblies and purchased components.

Am I doing something wrong or I misunderstood meaning of Inseparable BOM structure?

Hi,

Assembly 101 is not showing in PARTS ONLY parts list because it is not a part. Assemblies only show in PARTS ONLY parts list if they are BOM set to inseparable. But as you already know their components are not shown in such case.

To get what you need you must go with structured Part List style.

There is not way to get what you want in PARTS ONLY in a single PARTS List.

But you can have multiple PARTS LISTS on your drawing and than you could have what you want. (I suppose)

You set 101 as inseparable and do Separate PART LIST for it.

My sub-components 101A-101D are all set as inseparable and still they show up in PartsList as well as their respective purchased components. Component 101 does not show up in PartsList table if set as "Normal" (which it should be that way because it is an assembly). But, if it is set as "Inseparable", should't it show up with all other sub-components, because my sub-assemblies (which are set as Inseparable) show up just fine. Is it possible that Inseparable component does not "pass through" other Inseparable components ion Parts Only tables?

Hi,

inseparable assembly is treated as part and it prevents their NORMAL and INSEPARABLE components to show.

I am not sure how PURCHASED gets though.

Perhaps if you change all to PURCHASED (101,..) that this may work. I am not sure.

This is straight from Compt ..., err Autodesk:

"Inseparable assembly with purchased children components

Inseparable components and purchased components have one difference in their behavior. In a parts-only parts list or BOM, all children of a purchased assembly are hidden. The assembly itself shows up as a line item in the BOM. For Inseparable assemblies, child components with a BOM structure of normal or inseparable components are hidden. Purchased child components that are inside an inseparable assembly are still displayed in the parts-only parts List."

This text does not say what happens with child purchased components which reside inside child inseparable component (101A-101D). I guess, child purchased components within inseparable child component do not "pass through" all levels. They get get "stuck" at parent level.

So, I guess, I will have to make my sub-components (101A-101D) as Inseparable and main 101 component as Normal. This way, all components will show up in PartsList table except detail 101. i will add it later in excel spreadsheet.

So it seems you will not get that.

But maybe it is a solution to add virtual component of proper number somewhere, and it will mimic your assembly 101 in Parts List.

I do not like to add something "loose" that might cause issues later on. Since it is only needed for purchasing I will add it in excel spreadsheet later.

This sucks. I like to be able to use numbered sub-assemblies that have drawings and then other sub-assemblies that are just convenient to hold groups of parts. I'd like to be able to use a "parts only" list and make sub-assemblies with drawings "inseparable" and not have the component parts show up, and the sub-assemblies without drawings have all their component parts show up. This is the dumbest thing, Autodesk. Why have different behavior for "normal" and "purchased"? "Inseparable" should mean just that, not "Inseparable except for purchased parts".

make your assemblies with drawings "purchased" and you should have it like you want.

As I recall no components of "Purchased" elements populate.

Although @johnsonshiue accepted my post as a solution, and in fact it does solve one of the problems, I would not like everyone to get the false impression everything is working here as it should.

This video documents bug in BOM structure, that I think you should be aware of.

Hi Guys,

If I understood the request correctly, you would like all components within an inseparable subassembly not showing up in Part Only BOM (regardless of BOM attribute). As the Help document shows, Purchased Components are exception to the rule. I need to check with the project team. But, I think it was a conscientious decision based on our customer feedback. It is because BOM for the most part is for ordering components purpose. Something designated as Purchased should show up. Otherwise how would one know what to buy in a weldment subassembly?

I would like to see all purchased components in Parts BOM when inseparable component is within another inseparable component. Purchased components should break through all inseparable component hierarchy. This is in case when we have aluminium profiles frames and we have main assembly and sub-assemblies.

I re-read the whole thread and I think I got better understanding now. The purchased components only break through +1 inseparable level. If you have two inseparable levels, the purchased components will not show up. It think this is what you guys were looking for. The issue was reported by Cris (INVGEN-29581). Currently, we don't have a good solution yet. If there is any progress, I will let you know.
