Inventor 2018 vs Inventor 2019, or should I just wait for 2020?

Hi!

My Company is about to upgrade Autodesk Products from 2016 to 2018. The most drawings we work with is internally. By that I mean all manufacturing done by our drawings is done in house. So we do not need the latest versions of any CAD-programs.

We are about to upgrade to 2018, but is there any big reasons why we should upgrade to 2019? Will 2018 cause us any problems? For an example the hole feature is kind a nice in 2019. But the hole feature in 2018 is well enough for us, so differences like that wont make us change to 2019.

We avoided 2018 because of all the bugs & issues appearing on the forums. We went from 2017 to 2019 without any issues & 2019 works pretty well.

I would go to 2019 .....

Then have someone review / test 2020 when it comes out ... and if you like it upgrade then.

Are you using Vault?

If so, I wouldn't be jumping more than 2-3 version. So if you're on 2016, I would go to 2018 or 2019 and migrate up your files. Then from there go to the next version.

For me personally, I've found far fewer issues with 2019 than 2018. It has more enhancements and more coming with 2019.2

But if I still want to upgrade to 2018, there will be no bigger issues. Using it, I mean most of the bugs must have been cleared after all the updates since it was released?

Yes we use Vault. Why I am being stubborn about 2018 is cause historical we have done upgrades from 2012 to 2014, 2014 to 2016 with no bigger issues. So the "normal" way would be 2016 to 2018. But there is no reason to be stupid if 2019 is way more better than 2018.

You mentioned Vault. They don't recommend doing more that 3 versions for the migration.

So you could go to 2018.3 and then say this time in 2019 jump up to 2020 for Inventor and Vault. You would have the quarterly enhancements and bug fixes release for both Inventor and Vault by then too.

For Vault, it can't migrate files from more than 2 versions, so to go from 2016 to 2019 you need to install and migrate to either 2017 or 2018 first: https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/vault-products/troubleshooting/caas/CloudHelp/cloudhelp/2019/ENU/Vault-Install/files/GUID-E1B454DA-7967-48B7-BFDB-AE2A028E31B9-htm.html .

IMO You should also wait until the first service patch is released for software before upgrading, i.e. I'd wait until 2020.1 is released before upgrading, that way you don't have to deal with the little bugs and glitches that come with the annual release. That's my advice for all software in general, wait until the first service patch or other major update before upgrading.
