Morning all,

Another burning question that I can't seem to find solutions that I understand is how to make a company custom parts list template to use on multiple drawings.

I have attached an image of a recent parts list that I created but since I am new I couldn't quite figure out how to create the style that my company wanted easily and without creating it all manually. The table in the image was created by manually inputting every detail which was slow and confusing when some parts and quantities changed.

The company wants this layout with created parts starting from 001, bought in parts starting at B001 and standard fixtures starting at S001 to keep clear what needs to be manufactured and purchased.

Is there a way in which I can produce a template of this style which will automatically fill out with each new assembly or product?

I have yet to understand iLogic and some of the more advanced features in Inventor as I have only recently started working with this software,

Any tips and guidance is greatly appreciated again!

Many thanks,

Dylan

@Anonymous

Out of the box this would be a manual entering or over-riding of the item numbers that you would want. A program would simplify that process. Another thing you could do is make a custom iproperty for each component and assign a static item number and use that custom iproperty in your BOM. But that would mean item numbers would show up on the BOM in an odd order.. Like 500, 506, 510 and so on.

Hi Mark thanks for this!

I have had a little time this morning to try and wrap my head around it a little better,

Using the BOM lists and editing numbers / descriptions in there, I have managed to create a parts list which is pretty close to what I will be needing... I still need to change some descriptions and part numbers around and add blank rows between the purchased, stock and manufactured parts. Although I know this is still not the best way to go about a parts list, it is already much easier and quicker than what I was doing this time yesterday, so I will hopefully remember about this.

Once I have this parts list complete, is there a way to save it as a default for next time or because of the approach I have taken, would I need to repeat this for each drawing I create?

Thanks again!

No there's no way of saving this format so it can be used again. Basically Inventor is not designed to do a BOM like this. You may want to look at the Inventor Exchange app store https://apps.autodesk.com/INVNTOR/en/Home/Index and see if anybody has an app that would work for you.

I think the way to go is Custom Properties as said before. You need to have some kind of library of the parts you need, with all (well most) of the custom properties filled in. When using those pieces all fields are already filled in.

If the numbering differs from drawing to drawing, which it does i expect, you need to modify those each time again.

It really depends on whether these components are used only in this assembly, or if they are used in many assemblies. In my last workplace, each project we did was completely isolated from every other project, so we simply used the Part Number iProperty to identify each component. Purchased and Standard items were numbered separately from custom-designed parts. Our Balloon styles and Parts List styles used the Part # instead of Item #. We also had separate parts lists for custom designed parts (part #, qty, description) and bought parts (add manufacturer and catalog #).

But, if these components are shared with other projects/assemblies, you will have to use some code to manipulate the Item #s.

Thanks for the input everybody,

Some of the projects share some company standard parts as well as some bought in parts such as wheels and sockets and the like,

As the assemblies are rather large I guess it wouldnt be the end of the world if I had to re-create the parts list each time as this will only be a short portion of the time compared to creating the models.

I have recently created my own content library to conform to the companies stock and description requirements so thats one of the tasks shortened a great amount.

I think as long as I keep the part numbers / names / descriptions up to date as i create the assemblies, hopefully the drawing and parts list will be fairly easy to organise in the end, trial and error I guess

Thanks again all, really appreciate the help you guys provide!
