Can this laptop with AMD processor work with Inventor?

My daughter is taking an engineering class in which they are using Autodesk Inventor. They have a student download to work on projects at home, but it didn't work on her Mac (and we don't have Parallels or Boot Camp on it).

I was looking at a laptop for the household that has an AMD Ryzen 5 processor and AMD Radeon Vega 8 graphics in it. Does anyone know if Inventor will run ok or well enough on it? Here's a link to it. Thanks!

Just barely, I think. The memory (8 GB) is marginal, as is the hard drive (128 GB), as is the processor speed. Solid state drive is good, though. The touch screen is of no use at all for Inventor, in my opinion-- fingers just don't have the resolution for CAD work, though possibly with a stylus?

If this computer is going to be used for nothing else than Inventor on school-size projects, I think it could work. But I'd suggest twice the hard drive and RAM, better graphics, faster processor, and pay for those by ditching the touch screen.

And, if you've got a spare $100 or so, get a 3Dconnexion SpaceNavigator; she'll be the envy of her classmates and teacher(s). This is a 3D motion controller that makes everything easier in 3D modeling, but it uses one of the two precious USB ports, so maybe not...

I'd also suggest that you look for a laptop online, Newegg and Amazon will offer a larger variety of laptops and cheaper prices too. I'm not advertising for them, but if you're budget constrained it's honestly good advice.

Basically any laptop will run Inventor..

You asked "well enough" which is smart of you..

With that 2Ghz base clock speed its just not going to be a speed demon at all and will be rather slow (starting/opening/performing operations,etc..)..

But it will run it.. It just depends on the complexity now of the models she will be working on.. For small projects it should be "usable"..

A faster processor speed would be beneficial.. and yes to the min 8G of ram..

Yes.. good reminder...

Not necessarily needed though anymore..

If she needs to work with iparts/iassemblies then yes.. (see system requirements for full list)

In the past Excel was required for threaded holes,etc... but thats not the case anymore..

Thanks everyone for all of the replies. I'm just not familiar with these AMD models since it's been a while and looking at a laptop for not just engineering but general school work.

I did have her use an older Dell 3340 that has an i5 processor, 8 GB RAM and SSD drive. Weak integrated video graphics, but it seemed to work fine for her actually. Maybe it relies on processor more than graphics chip? Anyway, thanks for the replies and we'll see if this continues to work ok for now for her "simple" creations.

I recently purchased a similiar laptop from best buy. Ryzen 5 3500u processor and 12gb ram,vega 8 graphics with 256gig ssd drive. Running fusion 360 it does an adequate job. No speed demon but very usable at just over the $400 price tag.
