Part file features converted to solid

I have been working on an assembly containing multiple parts over the past year. The file names have changed a few times as I migrate through the design process. On several occasions, when I open the part file it has been converted to a solid. I have lost all of the sketches and features associated with the part design, and "solid" is the only item displayed in the tree. I have obviously performed some type of action to cause this. I would really like to figure out what I have done to cause this so that I can prevent it in the future. I creates a lot of head aches and wasted time having to re-model each part. I mention the name changes as I have a feeling it may be related.

Welcome to the forum.

Let me get this straight, you have an assembly you have been working on.

You say file names have been changed multiple times. How did you change them? Rename through Vault or windows explorer, or just renaming them in the assembly browser?

And some how the files change from a part with created features to an imported (dumb solid) part? Because when a part is imported that is what shows up.

Something just isn't adding up here.

Correct, the part opens as a dumb solid. At some point I have done something to make these files change to solid, I just can't figure out what that may be.

Save copy as step file or something then opened up in Inventor again and converted back to ipt file?

Or the parts were imported files and not created by you..

can you post one of the files here?

regardless.. As this point unless you can find the original on your computer you are basically out of luck..

There is the "feature recognition tool" though that will "try" to rebuild the features but no guarantees..

Have you opened a 2019 file in 2018?

No screen captures? No Screencast recordings? No files attached?

Attach a *.ipt file that exhibits this behavior and end all doubt.

Are you renaming the filename extensions as well? Parts are .ipt files and if you are renaming them (should remain the same).

In order to fully understand what you are doing, we need a step by step of the exact things you are doing.

You have an assembly with parts. You rename the parts in windows explorer. Renaming an 12345.ipt to 22345.stp as an example, then have to import that into Inventor? This wouldn't even be recognized in Inventor.

That is why the step by step is needed to understand and be able to direct you. This is why pics are important as well.

Clearly I am assuming your experience with Inventor is limited, be cause what you are describing is unconventional.

Hi! There should be logical reasons to explain the behavior. I suspect you have been using Future CAD workflows and you did not realize it. With 2017.4, you can open 2018 files (or 2019 files if you have 2018.3 installed). The geometry from newer files can be linked to an older version. But, you don't have access to features or sketches.

Is this what you did?
