SSD drive advice

If you work on projects locates on a network share, will adding an SSD to you r computer boost performance? or will this only be the case if you copy project folder to the local drive?

If choosing an SSD drive, what are good options?

Hello @Anonymous,

SSD drive can help improve the speed of client machine on reading and writing files, it might help on virtual RAM exchange once RAM is not enough to support.

If you configure the SSD in the server, then, it can help on net server.

Samsung's ssds are excellent check out their 900 series for m.2 or 800 series for sata.

Most likely no. Files are openning and saving on the network, not your local SSD. Some temporary files might save locally, depends on your setup.

Yes. Or use Vault.

If choosing an SSD drive, what are good options?
Depends on your motherboard. SATA SSD are common and easy to replace HDD. Speed is limited to around 500MB/s.
Some motherboard has m.2 PCIE for SSD which can get to more then 3GB/s.
Pick SSD with similar read and write speed. Lower end SSD has fast read but slow write. CAD software do lots of read and write, so the SSD should be fast on both side.
Also don't use SSD and HDD. Replace all HDD with SSD. Unless the HDD is ONLY for backup.

I have to disagree with the last part - conventional hard drives are fine for common file storage, and are still cheaper in providing TB-range storage. You can easily get into that range with movies, images, and other high-capacity files.

True if your CAD computer need that much storage space.

1TB SSD is below $200.

I had all 6 years of Inventor files and its less then 500GB.

Other people will have more but how much of those need to be available all the time?

Movies and photos at home is another story and speed is not a problem.

What I have found for inventor that SSD or HDD the difference isnt much and if so only install the current version to your ssd as parts etc from my experience dont really benefit from the extra speed, just save money...
