how to move an AutoCAD overlay drawing

Hello,

I have imported an AutoCAD underlay drawing on a plane in a part. How can I move it? it says fully constrained.

Right click on the underlay and use translate to move it.

Hi! Like Brad said, you can use Translate command to move it around. Or, you can right-click on the DWG node in the browser -> Redfine -> select a new plane and a center point to relocate it, similar to a 2D sketch.

On top of what has already been said, I would as I show below, in your sketch, turn on all of the contraints and figure out which one is preventing you from moving it.

Then, use, shown below, the move command windowing your sketch.

I use a lot of site plan underlays, and added to everything mentioned, there is one instance where I have to make changes in AutoCAD.

When the underlay is too far from zero, IE a few kilometers, I have to move the AutoCAD geometry closer to 0,0,0 in order for Inventor to make meaningful sense of the geometry.

Other than that, I use the Translate and Redefine tools as well.

I have Inventor 2019 and I don't see the "Reposition" or "Transfer" option when I right click the underlay

Do you have the dwg icon in your model browser? If so, right click on the dwg icon and choose "translate".

You are in an assembly, you need to be in a part.

You are in an assembly. Import the AutoCAD drawing into an Inventor Part and then you will see the Translate command.

In your case, expand the DWG and then expand origins, alter the angle constraints to rotate

the reason I have it in assembly is because i'm also going to be importing the Recap point cloud file (the building) on top of the DWG underlay (the building's 2D layout) unless there is a different approach to this

Hi! In an assembly, the dwg file contains origin planes and the center point. Expand the dwg node in the browser. You may need to delete the existing assembly constraints and create new assembly constraints between the dwg origin planes and the assembly origin planes.

There are two ways to do this, the fist is how you are doing it by placing the underlay directly into the assembly. This works, the translation and moving can be performed with constraints.

The other is by placing the underlay into a part, and then placing the part into an assembly. This is in my opinion the preferred method as you have a lot more control and options available to you with the underlay. For example being able to add work geometry and sketches. You can also constrain items to the underlay a lot easier.

There is still the issue of the underlay being too far from zero, for me personally, I don't even bother with translate, I just move the dwg file to zero in AutoCAD. I also do basic layer control and line style formatting in AutoCAD, it's just easier this way.
