How Can I Break The Link To A Mirrored Assembly

Hello,

Can somebody please tell me how I can break any link between a mirrored assembly and it's original assembly so that I end up with a totally independent, BUT, fully featured mirrored version of the original.

I've read above doing it with parts and in that situation apparently you have the option to 'remove original' but I don't seem to have that selection when creating a mirrored assembly.

I'm using Inventor 2017, thanks.

If the mirrored IAM is opened in a new window, then no link to the initial assy exists.

But you can choose parts or sub-assys for re-use, and mirror existing relationships (constraints).

Hi Romper,

Yes, if you use Component Mirror command in assembly, you will get either the derived mirrored parts or the repositioned occurrences. You can open the derived mirrored parts and break the link to the source parts. But, you won't get the features.

If you want to get the mirrored body with all features, you shall not use Component Mirror, since the option is not there. You will need to save each part as a new part. Then in the new part, create Mirror feature -> Body -> check "Remove original." In this way, the mirrored part is totally independent, unrelated to the source part. And, you can modify or add features as you wish.

Hi Walter,

Unfortunately it seems that your information may be incorrect as I have inserted the new mirrored assembly into a new window and yet any changes made to the original assembly are in fact reflected in the mirrored assembly. I do appreciate you taking the time trying to help though.

This seems (to me) to be a little antiquated. I would have thought that mirroring assemblies would be a common process and therefore the need to break links would be a default option in Inventor. Thank you for your help and answer however.

I was having the same issue! Drew a part in reverse on accident and then mirrored it to avoid redrawing. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to remove the original part. All I had to do was modify the mirror, check the box to remove original and it was fixed!
