Hot key for suppress function

Hi,

Seem like a user can't assign a shortcut for suppress function in usual assembly space (see attached image). Is it?

That is because to suppress means to create an LOD which requires keyboard input to name it.

Just be sure that you actually want to suppress rather than make invisible. Suppression is primarily a memory management tool (most useful with 32-bit operating systems); if you simply want to make components disappear from view, then you should be using visibility, not suppression.

Hi! Indeed, I don't think there is a hotkey to suppress a component. You could probably program it using VBA but there is no solution out of box.

In Assembly, like Scott mentioned, Suppress means unloading the document from memory. When it happens, Inventor initiates a new state of Level of Detail if it is not a custom LOD. The workflow was designed to help manage memory usage so that users with machines with limited memory can still design large assemblies.

Some users are using it for Configuration purposes. Could you tell me why you want to make a hot key? Do you need to use it often?

Thank for response. Actually yes, I use it pretty often. Suppose we need to design two different variants of a mechanical assembly where different components are involved. In the first variant we use one sub assembly, in another one we use another sub assembly which can be installed on the main assembly with help of some adapter flange. Those sub assemblies consist of hundreds or more sub components. Thus it becomes very relevant to hide them with suppress function, not only the show/hide function (which is used pretty often too).

I understand that it's not so easy to implement hotkey for suppress function, because this particular function linked with some basic thing (as you said unloading the document from memory), but again, it would be very nice to find some way to make it possible to assign hotkey for the suppress function.

Another situation when it will be quite useful to have. For example if we need to cut only one part of an assembly. Because the Half Section View function allow us to cut the whole assembly, not only one particular part of it.

It will be really great to have a hotkey for the Suppress function! 🙂

It would also be really nice to have this function when you would like to switch between sets of constraints for various configuration positions of the same parts. (Unless there's a more efficient way to do this.) It doesn't even have a shortcut letter in the model browser right click menu right now.

Surely suppressing constraints doesn't involve creating LoDs right?

Here's to hoping anyway.

This is a different situation than the original posting-- you want to suppress constraints, the OP wants to suppress components. Fortunately for you, there is a solution made just for this, although I'm not aware of one-button shortcuts to make it happen.

Check out Postional Representations. These allow you to create different combinations of suppressed/unsuppressed or overridden constraints to represent different positions or states of an assembly. One simple example is a hydraulic actuator (cylinder) with three different positional reps: extended, retracted, and free between limits.

Would that do what you want?

I'm baffled this function no longer exists. We just upgraded from 2016 Inventor and this is definitely frustrating that a newer release makes the job more difficult. I have used many versions of Inventor for over a decade and a quick right-click + "S" key would let you Suppress / Un-Suppress constraints easily. I would love to hear why Autodesk thought it was a good idea to remove this time saving feature. 😞

YES! I just upgraded to 2021 from 2018 (in which I recently discovered this shortcut), and I can no longer easily suppress constraints! Why would they take that away?? There is no other "S" on the menu after left clicking. This is a huge step back for me.

The removal of the quick right-click + "S" key to Suppress / Un-Suppress constraints easily is extremely frustrating. I am still hitting the "S" after about 6 months.

Why would they take this out? Has it been fixed in 2022?
