Here is a free 3D spection tool for Inventor on the App store. I am not sure if it is relevant to the discussion.

Inventor Dwg to AutoCAD Dwg Conversion Issues

Hello,

I have found no solution to mark up drawings for inspection within AutoCAD so am now exporting to Solidworks Inspection. I had issues with Inventor (2016) DWGs (no model showing, only dimensions) in SW Insp so converted to AutoCAD Mechanical dwgs prior to loading into SW.

In the conversion process the GD&T info (surface finish/concentricity etc.) is no longer editable within a Feature Control Frame and is instead a 'block' containing the info in a 'Symbol (ISO)' layer. This is problematic as it does not get picked up in SW Insp when in 'Symbol (ISO)' form.

I have had the box ticked or unticked in Mapping Options\General\Drawing Symbol Options\Convert Drawing Symbols but this makes no difference.

In short, how do I maintain the GD&T info so that it is editable within Feature Control Frame when converted from Inventor to AutoCAD?

Thanks in advance for any help with this.

Mike

In short, you cannot.

Once export to DWG, everything lose their 'properties'. They became lines and points.

If your SW is newer then IV, try open Inventor idw or dwg in SW.

Hi! I am sorry I don't quite understand the workflow you are using. Have you try saving the Inventor drawing as Inventor dwg file and then open it in AutoCAD? Or, you export the drawing to AutoCAD dwg file?

Many thanks!

Hi Johnson,

I have tried a few different workflows to achieve this: Inventor dwg opened in AutoCAD Mech/saved in AutoCAD Mech, Inventor dwg exported as a range of AutoCAD dwg files and with different mapping options selected/unselected but all result in GD&T info (surface finish/concentricity etc.) info which is made up of blocks and lines and no longer editable within feature control frame.

It would appear that (export options) Mapping Options\General\Drawing Symbol Options - "Convert Drawing Symbols to Blocks" being unticked should solve the problem but it makes no difference.

When opening within Solidworks Inspection (standalone for creating Inspection documents) Inventor dwgs have only the dimensions (no model) and the GD&T info is presented in blocks so the software can not pick out surface finish symbols and separates info from the feature control frame . Autodesk Mech dwgs however allow all GD&T info/symbols readable by the software and feature control frame info remains intact.

Thanks for your help,

Thank for the info, I am using Solidworks Inspection (stand alone Inspection software) for FAI documentation. Inventor dwgs only show dimensions (no model), the GD&T info/symbols are not available and the feature control frame info is separated. AutoCAD Mech dwgs work flawlessly hence the desire to convert as most of our designs are now stored as Inventor dwgs.

Cheers,

Maybe you should look into Model-Based Definition.

GD&T can be added to model then export as STP 242.
