"Could not start the Autodesk Desktop Connect Service"

I just installed Inventor 2020 today and when I went to start it up for the first time I got the following message, "Could not start the Autodesk Desktop Connect Service. The required services (Autodesk Desktop Connect and Guided Tutorial Plugin) may have been uninstalled." I tried uninstalling the software and reinstalled it and I am still having the same issue. What should I do to fix the problem?

Hello,

I am sorry you ran into this issue. Oddly enough I saw it recently myself when I was installing and mistakenly trying to run another version of Inventor at the same time. After allowing the install to complete, the error did not reoccur for me.
Would you be able to provide us with a snapshot of your Autodesk->Uninstall Tool window please?
It should have items like this (but without the Inventor 2017 item):

Do you have any other versions of Inventor installed on the machine?

Thank you for your response, but I am having trouble finding the uninstall tool on my computer. Could you possibly walk me through on how I can access the uninstall tool.

Short answer, you might have to go into the LWS folder and uninstall then re-install all three of these .msi files.

Hi @Anonymous,

You may be able to resolve the issue by running \Setup\x64\LWS\AutodeskDesktopConnect.msi as described in the articles Xun provided.
For reference, you can access the Autodesk Uninstall Tool in these two ways:
1. Select the Windows button in the lower right of your desktop and select Autodesk to expand it.

Select the Uninstall Tool button:

2. Type Uninstall in the "Type here to search" box and Autodesk's Uninstall Tool should be a match. Select it.

Hello,

It seems that I have Inventor 2019 in my WI folder and not Inventor 2020. When I got to uninstall 2019, I get a message that I am missing the setup.exe and I can't seem to find it in the Inventor 2019.

I apologize for my delayed reply. Thanks so much for the Uninstall Tool image. It is helpful.
Perhaps, you see Inventor 2019 in your WI folder, but can't uninstall it because you uninstalled it previously? Unfortunately, I am not familiar with the Web Installer. I seems strange it would not show Inventor 2020 since your image of the Uninstall Tool shows Inventor 2020 IS installed.

The screenshot you provided also indicates that Inventor 2019 is not installed on the machine.

Are you still seeing the "Could not start the Autodesk Desktop Connect Service" message? If so, it would be helpful to know if you have a node.exe process running from the C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Desktop Connect\forever folder? To do that, you can use the Windows Task Manager Details tab and display the "Command line" column please.

If it is not running, that would explain the error message.

Something to note is that Inventor 2019 installed some basic tutorials. However, starting with Inventor 2020, no tutorials are installed. They can be installed from the cloud using the Tutorial Gallery->All Available view.

I was able to fix my issue with the Autodesk Desktop Connect Service. My native drive is my Hard drive and all of my Autodesk software information on my hard drive but my WI folder was in my C: drive. I was able to reinstall all of the needed software for Inventor.

hard drive, C: drive can you be precise what does it mean please? I have as well custom way installed applications and cannot run them at all...

Hi, glad to see you came right. Just for info, if you intentionally want it removed/uninstalled, for example to gain some disk space, uninstall it, start Inventor, select the tools tab, select Add-ins and deselect Interactive Tutorial from Load Automatically and Loaded/Unloaded. That would also resolve the issue
