Hi All,

I often get confused between above 3 forms of reducing size of file. There is also Shrinkwrap substitute. When do you use each of them and what settings we need to select to reduce the size considerably for export ?

Also, If you do .step file or .SAT file conversion of say derived part, will the receiver get all parts as individual body ? Considering I select preserve each body as separate item while performing those operations ? Whats the difference between them.

Finally, when you amend main assembly, how do you update a derived part and substitute ?

Let me know the best form as recently, I am working on project where I need to share with other party having other softwares.

Regards,

Hello Yash,

Shrinkwrap: You define settings through the shrinkwrap dialog and Inventor will fill the voids or remove the information based on your settings, keep the mass property as what you've choose from LoD.

Shrinkwrap Substitute: Make or take an existing shrinkwrap model and replace the original assembly/part in the assembly you're working on. In the end its making a level of detail (LOD) to toggle between the original info and the shrinkwrap info. Keep the mass property as what you've choose from LoD.

Derived Part: Limited simplify ability vs Shrinkwrap and it won't keep the mass property as what you've choose from LoD.

Hope it helps!

Hi Xun,

Thank you for explanation. so derived part is to be used only if it is required for representation like pick and drop into required software ? (in that case, can I use composite body as outcome instead of individual solid bodies ?) Substitute and Shrinkwrap are shown as level of Detail in Assembly whereas derived part is new file altogether.

I accidentally marked it as solved but I have few more queries on this. My RAM have bit less space on system so my query is can you do FEA on a derived part, shrinkwrap and/or substitute ? The reason I mentioned I have very confined memory is because it takes ages to carry out FEA if the part is more than 2 mtrs or contains more parts than 8. As it is fasteners are excluded from FEA as well as in shrinkwrap and other size reducing methods, will FEA show correct result on size reduced assembly or part even after keeping bodies as separate entities ?

In other words, if I reduce size of my file, will FEA be done in first place ? and if it does, is it going to be faster or accurate ? Currently folder is 90% full, to perform FEA and simulation, how much free space is needed to do quickly ? For example, I am sitting on conversion to SAT file from derived part for half an hr. assembly is just 8MB. I can dump unwanted files to spare drive to make it faster. Let me know what percent of free space is required to perform FEAs quickly ?

Let me know. I can make required space on the drive.

Thanks and Regards,

Hello Yash,

Only stress analysis is supported for part, RAM usage is not that high but CPU have to be strong enough in this case, simulation compute is more rely on the CPU performance.

No matter in assembly or part environment, all components are treated as solids and convert to mesh at the very early beginning which means the FEA is build up on top of mesh based on the geometries. I don't think there is significant improvement for the performance of FEA if you do not remove geometry details during shrinkwrap or derive.

Hope it helps!
