Hello,

When I start a new part, I always use the new button and get a window with my templates here. As attached. When my colleague start a new part, he uses the create new part shortcut from the home screen. Should't this be the same templates? When starting a new part from the homescreen everything is in cm. When starting a new part from the window everything is in mm. So these are not the same templates. Does anyone know how to change this?

These two methods should both be accessing the same templates, assuming both of the following are true:

The template you pick from the window is standard.ipt

Template folder path settings (in Application Options) are the same on both machines.

Contents of the template folder are the same on both machines.

Your part template name is not "standard.ipt" - it is "Part - Neiland.ipt". When your coworker uses the "New Part" button on the Start screen, he is creating the part from the standard.ipt template. Because your custom template has a different name, your methods of starting the part are not equivalent.

If instead, you made your custom changes to standard.ipt instead of renaming the template file, then the two methods of starting the part would have the same result (assuming, as mentioned before, that the contents of the template folders match each other).

Hi! Like John mentioned here, it sounds like the templates were set up differently, though they share the same names. It is pretty straight forward to reset templates. On MyHome page -> click on the small gear icon -> Configure Default Templates -> select the desirable standard and unit. Or, you can go to Tools -> App Options -> Files -> Configure Default Templates.

Many thanks!

My coworker and I use the same folder for templates. It is on our server. Also when I execute the same actions on my computer I have the same result as on my coworkers computer.

In the template folder is not a template named standard.ipt. So what does inventor use as template then?

The template you pick from the window is standard.ipt. No it is not.

Template folder path settings (in Application Options) are the same on both machines. Yes they are

Contents of the template folder are the same on both machines. Yes they are

So in short, I should rename my template to standard.ipt?

I would like that whatever method you use to start a new part, that inventor uses PART-nieland.ipt. But probably this is only possible when you rename the file to standard.ipt.

@p.keizer wrote:

I believe this is correct. When your coworker uses the "New Part" button, it tries to use standard.ipt.

When it doesn't find it, Inventor uses some built-in, hardcoded definition. That's probably why you're getting parts in cm units, even though the actual standard.ipt templates are typically inch or mm.

The "New" buttons are always pointed at the "standard.xxx" template (standard.ipt, standard.iam, standard.idw or .dwg). To get those buttons to work properly, you need to use those names.

I changed the name of the tamplates. And now it is working.

Thanks all!

It would be nice that you just could point to a template for inventor to use. Regardless of the name.

That would be nice, but unfortunately isn't currently possible.

We went through the same sort of thing with our drawing template a few years ago. Even after showing users what template file to select, a sizable percentage of the time they would just click "New Drawing" anyway and get the wrong one. Then they would call me asking how to fix it.

We also made a VBA macro for starting new drawings. It did some other things as well, but the most significant thing it did was guarantee you started from the right template. However, people still clicked "New Drawing" fairly often, ignoring the macro. Then they would call me asking how to fix it.

So, finally, we gave up and renamed the company drawing template (which had previously contained the company name) to be "standard.idw". That way they would always get the right template no matter how they started the drawing. They skip some of our automation if they use the "New Drawing" button instead of the macro, but at least they end up with the correct title block.
