Hi! I am not sure if your issue is the same as the OP. This could be related to Autodesk Identity Manager. Please make sure all critical Windows updates are installed and the graphics driver is updated. Also install the latest update to Inventor and AutoCAD. After that, if the issue still persists, please install Microsoft Process Monitor and record a log during the operation. I would like to understand what exactly happens behind the scene.

Many thanks!

When I open Inventor 2020 and close it, the Inventor.exe process will not be closed. As a result changed Inventor settings will not be saved. When I close "Home" first and then close Inventor the process is closed as expected.

Inventor 2017 on the same computer does close as expected.

On a second computer Inventor.exe is closing as expected.

Does any else see this behavior?

@Anonymous

When you say on a secondary computer it closes okay. Do you mean Inventor 2020 or another version. In the end I'm wondering if Inventor 2020 is not properly registered with the operating system

Use the following steps to re-register Autodesk Inventor with your operating system:

1. Exit Inventor if still running

2a. Win 8/8.1/10: Select the Windows start button and type CMD (but do not hit an enter)

2b. Win 7: Select the Windows start button and type CMD in the search field (but do not hit an enter)

3. When CMD or command prompt appears in the list, right mouse click and select run as admin

4. When the command prompt appears, navigate using dos commands to C:\Program Files\Autodesk\Inventor <version>\Bin or where your Inventor.exe is located if you changed the default install location of Inventor.

In this example I'm navigated to my Inventor 2018 (exe) location.

6. Type Inventor.exe /install.

Wait a few mins and restart Inventor. At this time you will not see anything occurring. Don't panic. However if you launch Windows task manager you can watch the Inventor.exe process (and see when it ends).

Does that resolve the issue?

Thanks Mark, but it had no effect.

After a reboot inventor.exe does close as expected, till I open/close Inventor 2017. After that Inventor 2020 process does not close anymore when the Home was not closed before closing Inventor 2020.

On the other machine I can open/close Inventor 2017 and after that Inventor 2020 without this issue.

The problem is caused by Inventor Nesting. When Vault Prof. did run the Inventor.exe is not close when Inventor is closed.

Inventor 2020.2 and Nesting hotfix 3 did not help.

In Inventor 2025 the problem is still prominent. If you close Inventor and start Autocad it will be syrupy slow whith the turning bleu circle.

Hi! I am sorry I am still clueless about this one. Another thing you may try is to add an environment variable to control how Inventor loads dlls.

Go to Windows Control Panel -> System -> Advanced System Settings -> Environment Variables -> add "DYNAMIC_LOAD_APPLETS" and set it to 0. This will force Inventor to load all core dlls on start-up. It may take slightly longer to start up Inventor but it should not be noticeable on a newer PC.

Many thanks!
