Select sketch features only

Hello,

When editing a sketch with the "Select sketch features" option enabled, my cursor picks up faces and edges that are outside the sketch ( in the part environment). If I want to select faces of a part, I will select the "Project geometry" option and do so. Is there a way to enable the selection of sketch only features in sketch mode?

Hi! To avoid selecting geometry or component, you can set the component as Disabled (right-click -> uncheck Enable). But, the sketch geometry within the component will not be selectable either.

Thank you for the reply, but in that case, you can't project any geometry if necessary. I remember in the old days, when you entered edit sketch mode, the only thing you could select is the sketch features, if you wanted to select anything else than that, you used the project geometry option.

Hi! I am sorry I am a bit confused. In terms of selectable geometry and the project workflows, I am not aware of any change. Are you talking about automatically selecting geometry when you hover over? If yes, it is controlled by an option (Tools -> App Options -> Sketch -> "Autoproject edges during curve creation"). You may want to uncheck it. The option is there for a long time. In the past, it is unchecked by default. We got user feedback asking to turn it on by default.

Hello, the "Autoproject edges during curve creation" is already disabled. You pointed in the right direction, the edges outside the sketch get selected when hovering over them. It's like the "select sketch features" option is completely ignored and the "select faces and edges" is enabled all the time even in the sketch environment.

Hello, this behavior is reproduced in the attached image at the start of the thread. In the picture you can see clearly, the mouse cursor picks up the face of the part while in sketch mode (the surface turns red when hovering the mouse cursor over it). Isn't that proof enough? It's not a one time event, it is present in any sketch, same can be said for my other 3 colleagues at work. I repeat myself, the "select sketch features" option is completely ignored over the "select faces and edges" option. The thread has the same name.

The post is close to 100 views and open for some time, if there is no solution, can there be made a request to update Inventor with the function? It's not working properly.

Hi! I am sorry there is indeed no option to block Project command from selecting a face or an edge. I have tried the same workflow on 2009. It works the same way as far as I remember it.

Hi – What you describe is not normal/expected behavior. In Sketch environment with the filter set to “Select Sketch Features” and no command active, faces and edges should NOT be getting selected.

Can you unload all addins and see if that changes it?

Can you start a new part with <CTRL><SHIFT>New from the ribbon (to skip any templates) and see if that changes it?

Hello @Stami91,

Noticed that you are working in in-place editing part, I can confirm the behavior in this environment when creating sketch from scratch (see video) that the face is select-able when entering sketch environment. However, it is not happen in part modeling environment.

It is not a new case which can be observed in Inventor 2016 as well.

I need to contact the project team to understand more about it. Please stay tuned.

Hello @Tom_Sturtevant , I don't think neither that this is normal behavior. Opening a new a new assembly with <CTRL><SHIFT>New doesn't solve anything, neither unloading the addons.

As @Xun.Zhang pointed out, this happens only in the in-place editing part environment witch is inside an assembly.

This is an issue I have run into after our recent migration to 2019. Its all good and then after a few hours of working it happens to me. When i try to edit a sketch of a part in the Assembly Environment with a face of that part or another behind the sketch it only highlights the face or edge behind it. For now I have been reorienting my view, restarting Inventor or opening up the part in a new window.

So for me I don't get entire surfaces selected but all edges hidden behind the sketch are selectable even though I am in sketch mode and only have "Select sketch features" selected as my select option. As seen in attached picture.

I don't understand the issue.

Are you saying that you cannot select the Face when in Project Geometry?

Can you create a Screencast Recording of the issue?

Okey so the problem is when you have the selection tool "Select bodies" for example, you can only select bodies in your part. You are not able to select sketches or edges of a part.

But when you create a sketch, and change your selection tool to the setting "select sketch features", it still select edges of the part you are in and not just sketch features that it should. This is not a big problem in this part but if you have an assembly or part that is more complicated and full of edges and lines it can be annoying to sketch when your cursor selects every edge of that assembly instead of the sketched line you are trying to click on.

Hi! I am not sure if this is relevant. But, there is one overlooked workflow to avoid selecting geometry from other components when editing in place. You can make the non-editing parts disabled (uncheck Enabled). Then the components will become background image. They are no longer selectable.
