Tapered extrusion has intersecting faces that do not cancel out

I have an exported spur gear from the design accelerator. I am trying to taper the edges so that these gears would easily slide past each other when moving into a meshing position.

The problem I am having is that the tapering on the edges of the extrusion is not canceling out to make a solid edge. Instead, 2 faces are continuing on through each other, resulting in a strange "pocket" with a very thin line running through it. See the attached videos and part.

In 1 video I have ray tracing turned on because it makes it much easier to see the pocket of intersection.

An odd feature of this is that when the camera is zoomed out a bit further the edge suddenly snaps into the correct shape, which would be great if it stayed there. Unfortunately, as soon as you zoom in or export as a different file type it reverts to the incorrect shape. (See the second video).

How do I create the desired shape, without the weird pocket?

That does look to be what I wanted. It seems a bit strange that you need to do so many operations in order to achieve this...
