Export to step with assembly color

Hi Experts 🙂

Let me try to explain my fustration.

I have a huge assembly that i need to export to a stp. file, this i know how to do.

however i need the exported stp file to have the same colors as my assembly, at the moment when i export the .ipt color comes troug and not the color i have applyid in the assembly.

The assembly is so huge that iw would take forewer to open ewery single part to give the right color.

There is 3 solutions to my problem, i hope one of them is possible.

1: Export to step and apply colors from assembly (Not parts)

2: Apply the colors i already chenged in the assembly to parts

3: A easy way to apply colors to .ipt withoud leaving the assembly (Without having to open the .ipt)

Hope someone is able to help.

Hi Martin,

In theory, Exporting to STEP should be wysywyg, meaning the colors should carry over to STEP. I have seen defective behaviors that the colors are not exported correctly. Could you share an example here? I would like to understand the behavior better.

Thanks for your interest, i have made an image explaining the problem.

i want to export the colors of the colors of the assembly not the .ipt color

The only way i can do this now is to open a all .ipt files -> Clear Appearanses -> apply Appearans

if its not possible to save the .stp with .aim appearanses i would like an easy way to apply appearance to a part without opening them, i have tried the BOM way, but the assembly is simply to large.

What release of Inventor are you on? I just try the workflow on 2020. It works exactly like you wanted.

I'm in 2016

In want the boxes to stay Red and Yellow.

Dose your objects stay the same color at you assembly color and not the part color?

Hi! Yes, it works exactly the way you wanted. I did not try it on 2016. I suspect there could be some bugs or limitations leading to the behavior you are seeing. Would you be able to move up to 2020?

Hi there ITADMIN,

I've just tried doing what you wanted, and after looking all over the place for an answer I tried exporting in all formats avaliable in inventor... and this seems to work.

WORKAROUND: (To keep assembly colors, in an exported step file)

1) Select the *.iam you wish to export with the assigned colors.
2) Export > Other CAD Formats > file type *.sat

Now here's the deal, we impot again:
3) Open > Import CAD Formats > Select the *.sat file

4) In my case I select as an Assembly

Accept importing default importing options for assembly...

And colors from assembly level of the original *.iam file are kept.

5) Now you can export to STEP, and obtain your colored STEP model.

6) Opening the step with freeCAD maintains colors...

To recap:
1) Open IAM file
2) Export to SAT

3) Import to inventor IAM file again.
4) Export to STEP

Hope it works for anyone trying to do this!
