The .ipj file does not open Inventor 2020 with its project.

Hi,

I have had a problem for some time. I run a file, e.g. filename.ipj by double-clicking it in the Files Explorer of system. Inventor opens, but with the project that was used previously instead of the project assigned to filename.ipj. The desired project can be set only from the Run menu (Projects icon) in the open Inventor instance. What happened suddenly? Can anyone show me how to fix this situation?

Help me please...

I'll admit up front that I've never seen this type of process of selecting a project file. I've always selected a different .ipj from within the Inventor app.

Might I ask why you do it that way? Is it or was it that much of a time saver or an easier way? If you can select the .ipj from within the application, why is there an issue? In my head, the way you were doing it, is not a proper process.

I rank that right up there with users double-clicking a file in Vault Explorer to open the file as opposed to opening it from the Vault menu within the application. Even though it can be done, doesn't mean you should.

Did this process ever work in 2020 or did it stop with the 2020 release? Can you please explain your process more in case I'm misunderstanding?

I have been discussing this with development for a week or more now and found some users see this behaviour while others don't. In fact, this happens on my computer but only with Inventor 2020.1.

I need to investigate further.

This is the normal procedure to me to quickly opening a file in a program specific to its extension. For example, double-clicking on a .txt file in the File Explorer window opens the Notepad program with the contents of this file.

Similarly, I open Inventor files like .ipt, .iam etc. In my opinion, this is the normal procedure for opening files, not just by me. However, for some time running the .ipj file in this way opens Inventor (empty, of course), but with the project previously used instead of the new one.

@Malenki, I understand the double-clicking to open files like text or Word, etc. but I'm referring to if you use Vault.

If not, then OK, I can see why you do such. If you do use Vault, then no, it's not proper procedure as far as I'm concerned...I've seen the practice cause numerous issues in a Vault environment that once the practice stops, so do the issues.

But then again, I seldom ever use multiple .ipj's. Again, I'm always in a Vault environment and I have one general .ipj for all work and separate each by folders. The ONLY other .ipj's I will have are typically for training, so new hires can be trained without worry of messing up live files.

My 2 cents.. This is not normal workflow used in Inventor.. Not saying others don't do this but its not something that most do.. Ok my 2 cents are in.. 😁

The problem I mentioned does not apply to working with Vault. It is obvious that working under Vault's control, opening files in this way makes no sense and I agree that it is not correct.
BTW. My private task (only for the Basic version): I avoid this program as much as I can. I think he limits my possibilities, he is underdeveloped and I don't like him.

I find it a little surprising that this seems to be uncommon as well. However, I've spent about the last decade in a multi-project, non-Vault environment. So a lot of things probably seem "normal" to me at this point that others would consider bizarre.

When you double-click an .ipj file, it opens a new Inventor session with that project active. That's pretty much it, unless something goes wrong (as in this thread). At my company, we have hundreds (if not thousands) of .ipj files for various jobs, most of which are unrelated to each other. For us, they are literal "Project Files", as each of our projects has one of its own. When you're already in the folder doing other work, it is far easier to double-click the .ipj file that's right in front of you than it is to browse to it via the Inventor "Projects" dialog box, especially when you might shift between working on a number of different jobs throughout the day.

@Malenki, I'm a couple of versions behind (still running 2018 at my office for now), so if this is a 2020-specific issue I wouldn't have experienced it yet. However, if it's happening to a particular project file, and not in general to all project files, I may have seen something similar a couple of times. It seemed to be a corrupted project file, and replacing it with a new one resolved the issue. I believe the version I experienced would cause Inventor to hang during startup, instead of loading with the previous project file, but I don't remember for certain. So it may not be exactly the same situation, but maybe the same fix would work? Again, this is assuming it's file-specific - if not, then disregard this suggestion.

FWIW, I just tried this on my install of Inventor 2020 (I, like JD, have never even thought to open Inventor this way!), and it works just as you would like it to. There's something about your installation, but I have no idea what. You might try deleting temp files, and perhaps use the the Inventor Reset utility.

I have the same problem, it does not work. I use it when working on multiple projects. I have been working in Inventor since version 6. I used to use the double clicking on ipj's too, and must confirm that it has stopped working on my side too. Inv2020.1

Here are some examples of functionalities cancellation.

Forceeffect Canceled, Auto Explode in Inventor Canceled, and much else Canceled. I expected that this functionality will be integrated into Inventor and developed and nothing.

Thank you for the idea, but I didn't pass the exam.

Nevertheless, something touched me and I looked into the windows registry. The key branch [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT \ Inventor.ProjectDocument \ Shell \ Open \ Command] contains a default value: "C:\\Program Files\\Autodesk\\Inventor 2020\\BinInventor.exe /pf \"%1\"". The problem is that there is no such file in my system (under the name BinInventor.exe). I get the impression that the last update removed it and this is the source of my problem.
Can anyone confirm this and possibly give me the BinInventor.exe file for Inventor Release 2020.1.1. (Build 239)?

I have version 2020.1.1 and it works for me. I hope you made the association for Ipj.exe and then the association for Inventor. exe. You have to make 2 associations. And you must have update 2020.1.1

Sending file in attachment. But I don't understand how it will help you and why don't you want an update?

1. Try Inventor Reset Tool. It can be found in START = Autodesk Inventor 2020 = Reset Tool

2. association for Ipj.exe

3. association for Inventor.exe

If it doesn't work for you. I don't know how I can help you anymore.
