Drawing dimensions won't re-snap to new geometry. Have to close & reopen drawing

I get this bug on a fairly frequent but random basis. Maybe a few times a week. Basically, after working on a drawing for a while, dimensions lose their ability to re-snap to new geometry. I can drag the tail of a dimension to detach it from its current geometry, but then I can't re-attach it to anything. When I hover over an edge, the dimension just acts like it's not there. The edge doesn't turn red, and the little "snap-to" indicator doesn't pop up. If I let go, I get the "One or more of the definition points are no longer attached to the geometry" error message.

I've been having this intermittent issue for months now. It's pretty rare, so it's difficult to nail down a reproducible workflow that causes it. The best I can say is it happens after I've been working on a large dataset/drawing for a while. I believe it started around Inventor 2017 or so.

The only solution I've found is to close the drawing and re-open it. So not a serious/blocking issue, but certainly an annoyance.

Has anyone else experienced this? @johnsonshiue, is this a known issue?

Yes, I've experienced the same issue. Same error message, same weird dimension line jump back.

I can't reproduce it either.

That sounds like the same thing that happens when you are in "part priority" selection mode.

You can create dimensions like normal, but you can't adjust them.

THAT'S IT! Andrew, you're brilliant. That explains why closing and re-opening the drawing fixed the problem -- for drawings, the selection mode is remembered per each document, while it's open. When a drawing is closed an re-opened, the selection mode is reset to the default ("Edges" for drawings).

I'm probably going to report this as a defect, since I see no reason why we shouldn't be able to reattach a dimension while in Part priority mode. But that'll be much more likely to lead somewhere now that I can actually say what's going on.

Even in the meantime though, this will be VERY nice to know next time it happens.

No, the behavior does not sound right me. It is a bug, particularly if it happens randomly. Something is wrong. Are you able to see a pattern, like some files, some operations, or some geometry? Please let me know if you can find a reproducible case. We need to take a look asap.

Hi Johnson, thanks for responding.

You may not have seen the discussion after my OP -- we determined (thanks to @andrewdroth) that the Selection Priority filter is the root cause. When it's set to Part Priority, you can't re-attach dimension legs to new edges. You can create new dimensions, but you can't edit existing ones.

FYI, I have since created PR-2655 for this in the Feedback system, and INVGEN-33601 was opened for it. Hope this can be investigated and repaired soon. Thanks!
