Hi All,

I'm trying to cut a 3D airfoil out of a box so that I can send the blox to ansys fluent for analysis. I've tried using the patch (out of the assembly file), which didn't work. To make matters more difficult, this wing needs to be at a 30 degree angle with the fluid box. I've attached images of my assembly file in wireframe mode.

TIA.

I would create a new part file, then derive in the airfoil, position it relative to the origin by using the Move Body tool, then construct the box around it as a separate body. Finally, using the Combine tool, subtract the airfoil body from the box body-- voilá.

If you'd like someone to demonstrate, zip and attach your files.

Yes please, I'd like a demonstration! I've attached the wing part to this file. The box just needs to be 10000 in square on each side, and the angled side of the wing is the side that needs to be centered in one of the boxes faces, protruding inward. I'm working on Inventor 2020, and would like to figure out how to do it myself as I have 2 more wing geometries to try.

OK, here's my attempt with your airfoil file:

started a new part file

derived in the airfoil part, leaving out sketches

created a sketch on the angled end in order to get region properties, specifically location of the centroid.

used Move Body tool to relocate angled face to part origin and rotate by face angle (30.077635052 deg)

constructed a 10000 in square cube centered on the origin and encompassing the airfoil, created as New Solid

used Combine tool to subtract the airfoil solid from the box solid, leaving a cavity

Hope that's useful.

Hi Kelsey,

I believe Copy Object is the command you were looking for. Edit the part to be cut. Go to Modify -> expand the panel -> Copy Object -> pick the part as the tool. Then use Sculpt command to cut.

Many thanks!
